Grey's Anatomy - "Didn't We Almost Have it All"

The season finale of Grey's Anatomy aired on Thursday, May 17. Staying true to the show's form, it left the viewers anxiously awaiting next season to see what will happen to the interns. Each character had a major storyline going, some ended up with happy endings and others were left broken-hearted.

Richard was angry that he was not told Adele was in the hospital until Addison's confession that she may be having a miscarriage. Adele is flustered when she wakes up and sees Richard standing beside her. Despite her best attempts to get him to leave, he insists that he is staying right where he is and makes her drink some water. Shortly after, Adele starts to crash and Addison informs Richard that she may have a placenta tear and needs to be operated on immediately. When Addison comes out of the surgery, Richard mistakenly thinks that Adele has passed away on the operating table. He rushes in to see her and is overcome by relief when she opens her eyes. Addison was able to save Adele but not the baby. Richard asks if there's anyone he can call for her, asking about the father of the baby. Adele admits that the father didn't even know she was pregnant. "I misjudged him," she said. "I thought he would run away if I told him. Turns out he's a much better man that I thought. He's the kind of man that will make you drink your water." Richard realizes she is talking about him and they take each other in their arms with the bridge that had broken between them slowly being rebuilt.

That isn't the only storyline in place for Richard though. We also see Richard and Derek in Richard's office. Richard is offering Derek the position of Chief of Surgery. Surprisingly, Derek turns it down saying, "You're the best man for the job." When Richard doesn't argue, the audience is left to assume that we will see Richard back next season doing what he does so well.

Izzie finds George alone in the locker room and tells him that he is her best friend. If he wants to make his marriage to Callie work than she will do everything she can to help him do that. But she needs him to know that she loves him and she hopes he loves her too. Nothing is said and the other interns come into the locker room to get ready for Cristina and Burke's wedding.

While they are all in the locker room, a nurse comes in with their test results and everyone has passed, even Meredith who seemed to be the only doubt in everyone's mind since she was very distracted when she took the test. George says that he too passed, keeping it a secret from everyone that he did not.

Rebecca's husband, Jeff comes to the hospital and admits that he has trouble recognizing her after her plastic surgery. He holds his daughter and tells Alex that she looks just like Rebecca used to look like. Alex is angry and wants to know why Jeff didn't go looking for Rebecca when she went missing. Jeff says that he thought she had left him. "I didn't look for her when she was missing," he says. "But what's worse is I didn't see her when she was there." He obviously still loves her. The problem is, Alex does to. Alex goes to Rebecca's room and she tells him that she has been discharged. Alex tries to come up with several reasons for why she is not fit to leave the hospital. She tells him, "There is no medical reason for me to stay." She tells him that Jeff is a good guy and she will be just fine with him but pleads with Alex to give her a reason to stay. She says that she was more herself as Ava than she ever was as Rebecca. He tells her to "stick with the good guy," and leaves the room. Later speaking to Addison, Alex asks if she wants to grab a drink later. She says that he doesn't want her, he wants Ava and urges Alex to go after her.

Meanwhile, Derek tells Meredith about a woman at the bar who offered to buy him a drink the other night. She asks if she should be worried and he tells her that it was the highlight of his week and that's what she should be worried about. Later in the locker room with the rest of the interns, Meredith is preparing to leave when Derek walks in. She stays behind to talk to him as the rest leave. She tells him that if he is going to break up with her, to just do it and get it over with. He smiles and tells her that he loves her. She is the love of his life and he can't leave her. But she's always leaving him. He tells her that if she can't see a future with him to just end it because he can't. She says that Cristina needs to help at the church where she is getting married and leaves. Later when Derek arrives at the church to be Burke's best man, he tells Burke that Meredith and he are in trouble but that today is all about Burke.

While everyone is at the church, Miranda and George remain at the hospital. Miranda is upset that Callie was chosen for Chief Resident instead of her. She tells George that she is sorry that he didn't pass his intern exam and that he now has two choices: walk away from being a resident or repeat his intern year. He tells her that he can't repeat his intern year. She asks if she has failed him. "No," he replies. "I failed you."

Izzie starts looking for George at the church and Callie tells her that he will be late as it was a big day for them: She was named Chief Resident and they are trying to have a baby. The music starts to play and Cristina panics when she realizes she no longer has her vows written on her hand. While Meredith is calming her down, Burke at the front of the church, notices the delay. Going back to where Cristina is getting ready, he opens the door and finds her. She tells him that she is coming and the she is ready to get married to him. He tells her that he knows she doesn't want to do this. He also knows that she will because she loves him. And that if he loved her too, he wouldn't be waiting at the altar, he would be letting her go. Meredith goes to inform the guests that the wedding has been called off. She follows Cristina back to her apartment where Cristina says, "He's gone. I'm free." Meredith helps her rip off her wedding gown and her choker while Cristina sobs.

Alex rushes back to the hospital to find Rebecca but she is already gone. George is in the locker room when the new interns arrive. One of them being the pretty girl who asked Derek for a drink earlier. She introduces herself as Lexie Grey.

Season Three definitely left the audience wanting more and it left open lots of storylines for Season Four. Will George repeat his intern year? Will he stay married to Callie and will they have a baby? Will Derek and Meredith find a way to work things out? What will happen to Cristina and Burke? Will we see Rebecca again? And who is Lexie Grey?
