Grey's Anatomy - Love, Lust, or Desperation? The Predictions

Veronica
Distinguishing lust from love is always just a matter of time. At first, it all feels like love. The powerful and overwhelming connection to another person and the yearning need to spend all ones time with the other person, in constant contact with the other person. Lust fades. Lust is satisfied after a time and then either love takes over or the connection simply ends. The relationship ends and the lustees often feel a sense of relief. Dragging around a lusty relationship as if it were love is like a suitcase without wheels.

So, in the world of Seattle Grace, who's in love and who's in lust? Which of these pairs have the potential for a long term, committed relationship? Which are intense, dramatic, but ultimately short term flings?

Callie and George - Desperation. Period. Callie surely likes George. She lusts after him and maybe even loves some things about him. Of the two, if we can talk degrees of love, she is the person in this relationship with the closest thing to love. She isn't in love. She was desperate and quick to grab him up while he was at a weak point. She will find someone else. The problem with Callie in this show is that she really isn't particularly likable no matter how hard she tries. She just comes across as kind of messed up and desperate. George married Callie in what can only be called a frantic desperate move for some sense of stability and affection after a very traumatic time. No real love here. This relationship is over.

George and Izzie - Love that of course won't likely make it long term, since this is a TV show after all. George loves Izzie and Izzie loves George. Kind of like Forrest Gump and Jenny. These two are in love and lust and it's been building for awhile. They are best friends mostly. They will likely go back to the friendship thing at some point.

Alex and Ava - This situation is kind of sick. It's a bit like Frankenstein. Alex created the women he brought back from near death. He gave her a new face, a name and the emotional support necessary to help her heal. Now, she is back in the picture having run from her husband and child to find Alex and spend a couple of hours sleeping with him. Will he chase her? Will he bring her back to Seattle Grace? Alex won't do it, even if it is or could be love. He can't take the risk or make the commitment. He may love Ava to a degree, but he loves Izzie too.

Meredith and Derek - Love. This one is love and at the end of Grey's Anatomy they will somehow find themselves together again, for good. This is an example of good old fashioned love at first sight that keeps going and growing. Derek loves Meredith and she loves him. She however, is just a bit too young and confused to commit. The love is there but the timing is off. This will change.

Mark Sloan and Mark Sloan or McSteamy and McSteamy - Yes, this is love. Sloan loves himself. Completely and only himself. The prediction here is that he will make this season interesting. He may even become more human and reveal a bit of emotion.
