"Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" - a Night of Heartbreaks

Carol Rucker
If you're a faithful "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" viewer, you saw some of this week's heartbreak coming; but it was still painful to watch.

"Grey's Anatomy"

Cristina Yang - The Heartbreak of Giving up the Scalpel

Cristina walked away from her medical career, the one true love of her life. All those sneaky Season 2 heart surgeries, substituting her hands for Dr. Burke's, made her a world class surgeon before her time. Unfortunately a bad case of PTSD from last season's shooting rampage left her "ruined and dead" and took away her desire to heal.

Cristina returned to Seattle Grace/Mercy West this season as a shadow of her former superstar surgeon self. You've probably wished she'd either stop whining or just go away. She's chosen the latter, and it's all Meredith's fault for insisting Cristina save Derrick's life when she really wanted to walk away.

Callie and Arizona - the Heartbreak of Leaving a Lover Behind

Callie and Arizona's Lesbian flirtation took a full season to gel into true love. They became a devoted couple, willing to give up their jobs and belongings for love, a fellowship and a medical mission to Africa. Even as Callie watched Arizona hand over her waffle iron to Mark Sloan, you knew one of them would get left behind. They broke up at the airport, as good a place for heartbreak as any.

"Private Practice"

Nobody Likes Charlotte but that Beating and Rape was Pure Heartbreak

A few weeks ago, not even a devoted "Private Practice" viewer could have anticipated a crazed brute raping Charlotte King. She is a bit feisty... okay bitchy.. and a cheat; but he broke her hand and eye socket and that was heartbreaking to watch. Charlotte bounced right back to her old pushy self, demanding Addison tell no one she was raped, even if it meant letting her rapist get away.

Poor Cooper - The Heartbreak of Loving Charlotte

When Cooper Freedman saw his fiance' all broken and bloody, he bawled like a heartbroken teenager. That's the thing about true love; when the woman hurts the man hurts too, even if the woman is a cranky cheat. Love helped Cooper keep his cool when Charlotte yelled at him, threw a soft drink in his face, and demanded he help her get dressed and out of the hospital. You could see Coop's heartbreak easing just a bit when Charlotte yelled at the staff as they walked to the exit.

Love wants what it wants. On "Private Practice," love wants to swap partners every season; so Cooper may be destined to endure Charlotte's verbal punches to the gut 'til death do they part, but you never know.

Poor Sheldon - The Heartbreak of Being Out of the Loop

Poor Sheldon Wallace is another sweet "Private Practice" man. He's been taken in a time or two by Charlotte's crafty charm. As coincidence would have it, while Charlotte was in the hospital, Sheldon was going a round of mind games with the man who raped her. Of course he didn't know it at the time. We'll have to wait and see how broken hearted he is when he finds out.
