Grey's Anatomy Still Shaken with Cast Members in a Snit

Now What? to Spin-off or Not Spin-off? If the Money is Right

You'd have to be living under a rock to not know about the flap created within the "Grey's Anatomy" television cast when anti-gay remarks were made on set by Dr. Burke's real-life alter ego - Isaiah Washington. It seemed, though, that the dust had settled on the set when Washington apologized and checked into some kind of rehab unit for what sounds like Anger Management.

Today's uproar supposedly surrounds the possible spin-off of one or more of the characters on "Grey's Anatomy" to their own show, and money. It is quite usual for a phenomenally successful ensemble television show (as Grey's is) to spin-off at least one of its characters into their own show to feather the nest of not only the show's producers and the network, but that of the individual actor being spun-off as well. Think "The Mary Tyler More Show", "Rhoda", "Phyllis" (you get the picture).

The actors involved in the wrestling match are Katherine Heigl, known to fans as "Izzie" and Kate Walsh, Dr. McDreamy's ex-wife. Izzie is the intern who fell in love with a patient, was going to marry him, and then he died. While the character of "Izzie" has been very popular, she is not the only one generating "heat", fan mail and higher ratings. The tall, red-headed Walsh, who plays the ex-wife and specialty neo-natal doctor, has slept (as her on-screen character) with nearly all the males in the cast.

It was rumored that several of the primary actors might end up with their own spin-off shows. According to sources however, Walsh is the only one who was actually in negotiations for such a show. If that is true, than certainly Ellen Pompeo, the show's primary star, aka Meredith Grey, has a right to squawk.

In addition, Hiegl was in negotiations for more pay. Apparently Heigl is not currently paid as much as Sandra Oh and Washington. At this point, she is said to have broken off negotiations in light of the news about Walsh's supposed offer. It is interesting that Heigl seems to seek the spotlight more than any of the others during awards shows.

All of the ensemble players came from different places with varying degrees of experience, but Oh had started to rise to recognition in feature films. That will usually get you a few more dollars in your paycheck. But now that all of the primary characters are drawing their own share of the fan mail, it gets cloudier as to who deserves more money.

At any rate, it is sad that the cast of this wildly popular show is starting to implode due to the "I want more" syndrome that often afflicts Hollywood celebrities. Let's hope that some kind of truce can be called and reasonable expectations met so that we (the audience) can get on with enjoying the show.

  • Rumor has it that Kate Walsh is in negotiations for a "Grey's Anatomy" spin-off show.
  • Rumor has it that several of the characters may get spin-off shows.
  • It does seem that we see Heigl in public more than anyone other actor from the show. Why?

Kate Walsh is amazing and can act Ellen Pompeo off this planet. It's not surprising she's got her own series, go Kate! I'd rather watch her show any day, I love Greys but mainly for Addison, and it'd be a blessing not to listen to that annoying voice over which rambles on for the first 15 minutes about absolutely nothing in particular.

I don't know where Katherine Heigl gets the idea that she should be paid more than Sandra Oh and Isaiah Washington. Sandra and Isaiah are both established actors and who have won acting awards for the show and therefore deserves higher pay. Heigl was a nobody before Grey's Anatomy. She has to give her head a shake and just be thankful that she is in a hit show. Without it, what would she be doing. And yeah, she seems to be the only one who likes the spotlight at these awards shows. She should learn to keep her mouth shut.

At first I had my doubts, and well honestly I'm still not sure whether it is a good idea, but after hearing about the other cast members' response toward the news and toward Kate Walsh, I am shocked and somewhat unsettled. I am rooting for the new series, and as a fan and supporter of Kate Walsh, (and a fan of Grey's mainly due to the lure of Addison Montgomery), I am definitely planning on officially switching over to Walsh's series.

Honestly, the character of Addison Montgomery is the only one which can stand without ties to Meredith Grey. Addison is not defined or intricately dependent on Meredith, like Stevens, Yang, or Shepherd. I don't know why cast members of Grey are so shocked. They need to open their eyes, get it together, and back off Kate Walsh.

First off, I agree with your assessment of what is going on with the Grey cast members in regards to their egos and prim donna tendencies. However, as a diehard fan of Kate Walsh and of the character Addison Shepherd, I'd like to point out that Addison does not sleep with "nearly all the males in the cast." She has slept with solely two men and although this is a minor technicality to point out, I feel it must be addressed because Addison Montgomery is a character that has been unjustly berated and vilified. I'd also like to point out that if any character should be singled out to having slept around quite often, I'd say Meredith Grey is the one who should be pointed at. Although she too has only slept with two men (within the context of the series time span) she was involved with three men and actually met Derek after a onenight stand with him. Classy, ain't it?

I'd also like to comment on Kate Walsh getting her own spin-off. At first I had my doubts, and well honestly I'm still n
