Grey's Anatomy's Dr. George O'Malley: T.R. Knight

Kristina Jones
Some of the best drama happens on ABC on Thursday nights when Grey's Anatomy captivates its viewers. The show would not be one of the best shows on television if it were not for its diverse and brilliant cast. As the ever lovable and emotional George O'Malley, the world has been formally introduced to T.R. (Theodore Raymond) Knight. This past year has been one of question, following an incident on the set of Grey's Anatomy, which prompted Knight to come out and put an end to questions swirling in the media regarding his sexual orientation.

T.R. Knight's Roots

T.R. Knight hails from America's heartland. He was born March 26, 1973 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. T.R.'s family includes his brother and mother. While living in Minnesota, T.R. began acting with the Guthrie Theater at the young age of five. Once T.R. had graduated high school, he made his next stop at the University of St. Thomas, which is located in St. Paul, Minnesota. He remained in college for a brief time before dropping out. Once T.R. had left college, he began taking on some leading roles with the Guthrie Theater.

T.R. Knight's Career

Embracing his love of the stage, T.R. moved to New York City to purse a career on Broadway. T.R. is most remembered for his performance, opposite Patti LuPone, in the 2001 production of Noises Off. He would continue to perform on Broadway, starring in the 2003 production of Tartuffe and the 2004 production of Boy. T.R. Knight received a nomination for a Drama Desk Award for his performance in a production, not on Broadway, of Scattergood.

While Grey's Anatomy has brought the 30-something actor fame and attention, it is not his first appearance on a television series. In 2003, Knight began his television career as Ryan Lemming, a character from the very short-lived Nathan Lane series Charlie Lawrence. On Charlie Lawrence, Knight starred alongside Laurie Metcalf. When ABC was looking for talent for its new show, Grey's Anatomy, in 2005, Knight was tapped to play the loveable George O'Malley, who is an intern at Seattle Grace.

Following the incident on set in early October, there has been much speculation as to Knight's future on Grey's Anatomy. In recent weeks, there have been rumors swirling that T.R. will be leaving the show, alongside co-star Kate Walsh, who will be starring in her own show. Apparently, T.R. Knight has said the comments of co-star Isaiah Washington were too disturbing for him to get over. Following the season finale, it appears T.R. Knight's character will be leaving the show, due to his failure of passing the intern exam.

I hope they keep George around, the show wouldn't be the same without him.
