Grid Computing, according to IBM is the application of resources from various systems in a network simultaneously to correct a single fault. Grid computing generally makes use of all the unexploited potential of computers in a network system. World Wide Web, when it was first introduced transformed our outlook and accessibility to information. Today whatever information we want, all we have to do is search in the World Wide Web and we get the answer instantly. Similar to this, the grid computing targets at computation in a network and is the next significant step forward for the Internet.

Internet, when it started, was equipped with TCP or IP and networking. The electronic mail (e-mail) was the next step which made communication much easier and accessible. Later the data sharing evolved with the help of the World Wide Web. This will be followed by the grid computing which is the sharing of the potential that the computers are capable of, like the storage capacity, memory power and processing intensity. It is actually incredible and amazing to think of the various advancements that can be brought about if you had within your reach, the storage, memory and processing capability of all the computers in a network just like the information sharing on the World Wide Web.

Grid computing therefore has many facets to it like,
1. Ability to link all the computational powers available and make them easily accessible to businesses and universities.
2. Unite all types of computer systems and elucidate computational effectiveness.
3. Establishing itself as the next stage in enabling the essential computational ability for the Web services.
4. Evolving as a business on demand and utilizing computing as a basis, which the IT giants like IBM are flaunting.

In future, with the various technical advancements coming to the fore, the computers will begin sharing the storage, memory and processing powers, just like they are sharing the information in the present scenario. Applications are sure to make use of these unexploited resources. Though the full extent of the potential of grid computing still remains to be unearthed both shot term and long term consequences are bound to happen to the grid computing.

With grid computing, the main core of the computers, instead of the terminal parts, will be linked. This will make the Internet a picture perfect world where all the applications, databases and image streams begin to exist in cyberspace. When connected to the grid, a computer will be able to access power from all the systems that are in the network. Irrevocably grid computing has become the next step forward for the Internet.
