GRID Review (PS3): A Solid Racing Game

GRID is a street racing game released for the Playstation 3 and developed by Codemasters. Racing games have really stiff competition these days because there's so many excellent racing games out there. In addition, racing games usually age very well and when one is successful it's played over the years many times.

Story : Well it's a street racing game so there really a story to be had, but that shouldn't be considered a detriment because it's a street racing game.

Graphics : The graphics are amazing. Some of the best graphics for any racing game ever are available in this game. Many of the cars are simply stunning and the level of detail on every single object in this game is enough to make you scratch your head and think about the manpower it must have taken to create such splendid graphics. A huge triumph. All the cars are animated and drawn beautifully, the backgrounds are lush and I experienced no slowdown when playing this game.

Sound : The music is kind of annoying, and I tried to be as generous as I could. I'm just not a fan of techno and this game is filled to the brim with it. It's easy enough to play on mute, but then you miss out on the sound effects are by the way are quite amazing. The vroom sound in this game is one of the best I've ever heard in any racing game. Revving your engines never sounded this good.

Game play : The most important aspect of any racing game is the controls, and I'm glad to say that it mostly delivers in this game. The controls are very sensitive, but not overtly sensitive. Making drift turns are very very smooth and feel perfect. I do think the controls could use just a bit of tightening, but I would say it's fine without it. My favorite ability in the game is to be able to replay certain spots in the race and try to do them over without making any errors. I've not seen this in another racing game and I absolutely love that it's available for you here. Other than that, there isn't much to mention. The absurd amount of experience you need to really ''beat'' the game is ridiculous and not amusing, but that's pretty much it.

Re playability : If you love racing games, you'll love this. If you only have a passing interest, rent and try this game out first.

Overall : 8/10. A solid racing game that's really good for people who don't usually like racing games.
