Grieving While Pregnant: Coping with the Loss of a Loved One During Pregnancy

Erin Rivera
The loss of a loved one or friend can be traumatic for anyone but especially for those who are pregnant. Pregnancy brings along many different emotions and these emotions can seem multiplied when a loved one is lost. Here is a look on how to cope with the death of a loved one during pregnancy.

The first step to dealing with a loss during pregnancy is to recognize emotions and just accept them. It is okay to cry and feel sad but if it feels as though it is too much or it gets to the point where it makes it to where the pregnant woman cannot eat or sleep, then calling the doctor or midwife is a necessity. They will be able to assist in giving helpful ideas or even setting up an appointment to talk to psychologist or counselor to help deal with the grieving process. In some cases of extreme loss a prescription for an antidepressant that is safe to take during pregnancy may be needed.

The next step to coping with the loss of a loved one during pregnancy is to try to remain focused on the pregnancy. This can be very hard, especially when losing someone who was very close but it is important to try to remain calm and stay healthy not only for the well being of the unborn baby but for the well being of the mom as well.

Next, one should take help if it is offered. If others are offering to do things such as cook meals, watch children or clean the house, then accept this help. Pregnant women grieving should take advantage of the time to deal with their emotions or get some much needed emotional and physical rest.

Finally, developing a good support system is essential when it comes to dealing with loss during pregnancy. Turning to a trusted family member or friend can really be helpful as can finding a good support group. There are many different support groups that deal with different types of losses. For example, there are groups that deal specifically with the loss of siblings or parents. These groups are usually available locally as well as online.

By following these steps, pregnant women will have a better chance of staying healthy throughout the remainder of their pregnancy.
