Grocery Money Saving Tip: Dealing with Cashiers Who Hate Coupons

Don't Allow Unpleasant Grocery Store Clerks to Discourage Your Grocery Coupon Use

If you use a ton of coupons when you grocery shop, you've no doubt came across cashiers who simply hate ringing you up. They may roll their eyes, tell you that you can't use that many coupons, and some may even not scan all of the coupons.

Here are a few tips for dealing with cashiers at the grocery store who hate coupons users.

First of all, be sure you know your grocery store's coupon policy and follow it to the letter.

For example, my store only allows the use of three identical coupons in a single shopping trip. Because of that, I know not to even try using more than that.

Secondly, have your grocery coupons well organized, and don't take forever to get the coupons out and hand them to the cashier.

You really don't want to be someone who holds up the line simply because you're coupons are unorganized.

Third, be sure to remove any grocery coupons that you didn't buy products for.

Sometimes you may plan to buy a product and therefore have the coupon clipped and ready to go, but then the store doesn't have the product of choice. As the cashier is ringing up your order, be sure to remove any coupons for products you are not purchasing.

Fourth, weed out expired grocery coupons.

Cashiers have a right to be annoyed if you hand them a stack of retired coupons, so be sure to check the expiration date before attempting to use the coupons.

Fifth, don't let their attitude get to you.

Their attitude is their problem, not yours, and there is no reason for you to allow them to bring you down with their bad attitude. (I know this is easier said than done, but while you don't have control over someone else's attitude, you DO have control over your own attitude. this is a good opportunity to exercise self-control!)

Finally, if you've done all the above and you have a cashier who hassles you, speak with the store manager.

This seldom needs to be done, but if the cashier refuses to honor the coupons you know are legitimate, finish up with that cashier, then immediately head to the customer service desk to file a complaint.

Be sure to do so in a calm, respectful manner, or else the store manager may be more apt to (at least privately) side with the cashier. Your words will carry more weight if you present yourself in a professional manner.

The cashier will likely be reprimanded and will hopefully learn not to bully customers who choose to use coupons.

Recently I have had cashiers neglect to deduct my coupons. I suspect they are pocketing the money.

I use coupons myself and as a cashier I encourage my customers to use them. I think what is hard for cashiers is the pressure to get lines moving and when folks come to the register with coupons that don't ring up because they aren't right somehow--that's pretty difficult. You have people in line waiting and staring at you and sometimes moving to other lines. BE ORGANIZED!! That's my #1 hope for folks using coupons--understand its not so easy for the cashiers.

These are really good tips. I have come across some cashiers who take a long time sifting through coupons to check expiration dates and to make sure that the customers have actually bought items that they are using coupons for. That's one reason why I like self checkout.

I like it when I get the teens that don't pay attention to expiration dates, etc. It's not that I ever have expired coupons or anything like that but I just love that they buzz through them, overriding any questions, and I get out of there faster!
