Grocery Shopping 101: Save More, Spend Less

Heide Lynne Canlas
When you are on a tight budget, you have to plan how you are going to spend your money wisely. Here is a quick and easy guide on how to spend your money wisely when buying supplies in a grocery store:

1. Make a list in advance of what you need. Use this as a guide for what you are going to buy in the grocery store. With the list at hand, there will be less temptation to buy unnecessary things that you see as you go around the store, at least until you are able to buy everything. Also, having the list will ensure that you will not forget to buy anything that might need another trip to the grocery or buying it somewhere where it is more expensive.

2. Go straight to the shelves or lanes where the things you need to buy are located. Do not stroll on every aisle to avoid being tempted to buy other things that are not necessary.

3. Check the contents and the weight of each product. Do not be fooled by the size of can. There are products that are packed in big cans or cartons but weigh less than those packed in smaller ones. When buying liquid goods, check the concentration of the substance. A concentrated juice might weigh less and be more expensive.

4. Do not be fooled by discounts, especially if it will make you buy more. Just buy what you need. You might be induced to buying more than you need because it is on a discount when in fact you only save a little. As a general rule, do not buy items on discount if you don't need them.

5. Save coupons from magazines and newspapers and use them to get some significant cut-off on the prices. But be choosy of which coupons to use. Like the deal with discounts, do not buy something that you do not need or is more than what you need just because you have a coupon for it.

6. As much as possible, do not bring children along with you in the grocery. They might point to some things that they like and make you buy them even if they are not in your plan.

7. Bring money that is just enough for your grocery shopping, but bring a few extra bucks in case of emergency. Knowing that you just have enough money in your pocket will compel you to stick to your budget. Leave your credit cards at home if you are going to pay in cash to avoid the temptation of buying more items on credit and destroying your budget.

Because it is really quite difficult to earn and save money nowadays, it is best to practice budgeting in the best possible ways.
