If you have never clipped your dog's nails, take it to a vet and get one of the vet's technician to show you how to do it. You have to pay them to clip his nails. Watch carefully and you can learn and then do it yourself the next time.
Clipping the quick accidentally can cause a lot of bleeding, hurting the dog terribly. So just snip a little on each nail. Never be in a rush to finish his nail cutting even if your dog is impatient and wants to finish quickly.
If you want to use motorized tools such as a Dremel, make sure you have some training in using it. It is very easy to overcut.
Check the color of your dog's nails. If it has dark nails, you should be able to see a
black circle in the clipped part of the nail. Stop clipping before you reach there. If your dog has light or white nails, you would see the pink quick. Stop clipping before you reach there.
If unfortunately, you do draw blood, quickly apply pressure and add popular styptic powder like QuikStop. Alternatively, you can dip its paw into corn starch or flour to coagulate the blood. If the bleeding does not stop here, get your dog to an animal hospital or a vet immediately.
2. Getting Shampoo in your Dog's Eyes during Bathing
During a bath, most dogs have the habit of shaking their wet heads and it becomes easier for shampoo to flow into his eyes. So before bathing, remember to buy some sterile ophthalmic ointment from a pet shop and dab in both eyes.
If shampoo gets in its eyes, try saline eyewash or just cool water to reduce the level of irritability. Never use more ointment for its eyes. If its eyes still appears red, then it needs a vet's help.
3. Allergic Reactions from your Dog
If your dog's skin becomes red and it looks irritated and perhaps feels itchy after a bath, it may be an allergic reaction. You can try natural products or use products with oatmeal. Remember to rinse completely to avoid the residue build-up.
If you observe more serious allergic reaction such as diarrhea or hives from your dog, then it requires medical attention immediately. If it just feels itchy, you can try several types of mild products until you find one that it especially likes.
If that also fails, then you are advised to send it to the vet, who has the expertise and knowledge to identify its allergens.
4. Leave your Dog Completely Unattended!
Never leave a dog unrestrained or unattended. When it is on the floor, you can groom it. How about when it is in a sink or a table? Then you need to restrain it. How? Ensure that it has no place to jump by making a barrier that is tall enough. Dogs that do not like to be groomed will try to escape, resulting in injuries. If you have a puppy, jumping off a table or a lap can lead to serious injuries.
When you are washing your dog, ask another person to help you by holding it in place if your dog is rather aggressive and disobedient. As you learn to groom your dog, always stay calm, be patient and offer incentives such as its favorite dog food. Don't forget to praise and play with it. You will develop a very closed relationship with your dog.
