Groovy Ideas for 70s Halloween Costumes and Accessories

Jennifer Claerr
The 70s was a decade full of fun, frolic and bad taste. By looking at what was popular in the 70s, you can get hundreds of costume ideas for Halloween. Here are some ideas for some of the grooviest 70s costumes you can make yourself.

Ideas for 70s Elvis Halloween Costumes and Accessories

70s Elvis Presley costumes also make a popular choice for Halloween. You can make an easy 70s Elvis costume by using a white long-sleeved polyester jumpsuit with an open neckline, a large collar and bell bottom pant legs. Get accessories such as a red scarf to go inside the neckline of the jumpsuit and a white fabric or foam belt. Also find a fabric stud setter and plenty of studs in several different colors such as silver, gold, red and blue. Use an eagle pattern to set the studs on the front of the jumpsuit and the belt. If your hair isn't dark, get an Elvis wig. If it is dark, style your hair into an Elvis style by using plenty of hair gel, mousse or pomade and use a comb to sculpt the hair upward and back. To make your Elvis Halloween costume complete, wear a pair of gold plastic aviator or Elvis sunglasses.

Ideas for 70s Basketball Halloween Costumes and Accessories

Basketball was just as hot in the 70s as it is now. Unfortunately, basketball players weren't anywhere near as well dressed as they are today. You can take advantage of their sports fashion faux pas to make a great funny costume. To make a men's 70s basketball costume, get a close-fitting tank top and pair of short shorts, the more brightly colored and gaudy, the better. If the tank top and shorts don't have racing stripes, sew them on. The shorts and tank should have at least one and as many as three stripes running down the sides. Also get some tall white knee socks with two or three stripes at the top. If your hair isn't long, get a 70s wig to augment your basketball costume. Add a terrycloth headband, wrist bands, dark-colored sneakers and a basketball.

Another idea is to make a 70s Harlem globetrotter costume. Get a pair of very short shorts with red and white vertical stripes, a blue tank top and tall white knee socks with two thick blue stripes surrounding one red stripe. Get some blue Converse high-top sneakers and red, white and blue wrist bands. Get iron-on letters and numbers to put "HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS" and your chosen number on the front and back of the tank. If you have room, also iron on some red and white stars. Add a giant Afro wig and a basketball to your costume to make it complete.

Ideas for 70s Pimp Halloween Costume and Accessories

The pimp costume is a men's costume that leaves a lot of room for creativity. To create a 70s pimp costume, go with brightly colored pieces in colors like orange, purple, pink, yellow or green. To give the costume a 70s look, choose a long jacket with an exaggerated lapel and bell bottom pants. Preferably, the costume should have faux fur trim such as leopard, zebra or tiger. Add a matching pimp hat with the same faux fur trim. Then add accessories like a huge rhinestone dollar sign pendant on a chain, a walking cane, platform shoes and a pair of sunglasses.

To create a women's 70s pimp costume, get a short brightly colored minidress or a blouse and bell bottoms. If you like, you could also get your costume pieces in an animal print. Also get a long coat with faux fur trim, a matching wide brimmed hat and platform shoes or boots. Wear big earrings and a necklace with a rhinestone dollar sign pendant.
