COMMENTARY | After U.S. District Judge Richard Leon placed a temporary injunction on forcing tobacco companies to place ugly visual ads on their cigarette packaging, the government is again overstepping its bounds when it comes to the Constitution of the United States. It isn't bad enough our elected officials feel they have to get their agendas to get nationwide healthcare approved, now they feel the need to take it one step further and stick it to one of the nation's oldest industries - tobacco production.
Obama and his administrative groupies again are forcing their own beliefs onto smokers through the form of disgusting advertising. The overly gross ads that were produced by the FDA in 2009 are being put back on the table for cigarette companies. Those of us who currently or have smoked know the health dangers of smoking. We know it causes lung cancer. We know those who are around smokers can suffer from second-hand smoke.
I also know those who know I smoke don't have to be near me while I light up, either. To be in the same vicinity of my smoking is their choice. I chose to leave the house to have a cigarette. I chose to wait until going outside to my car after dinner in a restaurant to smoke. I chose to stand downwind of you while I smoke. It was your choice to follow me to were I was standing and even upwind to be in the line of the drifting smoke from my cigarette. See how these choices are made by smokers and nonsmokers? It's a choice just like drinking and abortion.
The warning labels placed on individual packs of cigars and cigarettes are enough to remind smokers why it is bad for our health. We do not need ugly, gross pictures to show us what we already have known for centuries. If Obama lets the FDA put this in effect, I will just choose the least ugly picture of them all. Then I will hide the ugly pictured pack in a cigarette case so those who don't care that I'm smoking don't have to look at crappy pictures.
