Groundhog's Day on February 2 - and Punxsutawney Phil

Punxsutawney Phil is the Star of the Show on Groundhog's Day in Pennsylvania

Rue Cooper
It's that time of year again when the folks of Pennsylvania rely on a groundhog's knowledge to let them know how many more weeks of winter will have to pass by, before it will finally be spring. This furry and much-loved creature gets restless about this time of year, wanting to exit his climate-controlled, luxurious, simulated tree-stump, and attempt to see his shadow. That's what all of the celebrations are about. Six more weeks of winter can be expected if he sees that shadow.

Gobbler's Knob: The weather capital of the world!

Stephen Tobolowsky will be the speaker this year at the Groundhog's Day Banquet (he played Ned Ryerson in the movie Groundhog Day). A big celebration will take place with thousands of people traveling to Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania, where the festivities start at 3 a.m. - and well before Phil gets out of bed. A sign at the site informs the public that as early as the mid 1800's Groundhog's Day was observed, and also, that the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club was established in 1899. Many fans of the Pittsburgh Steeler's were in the crowd last year (2009) wearing the colors, black and gold.

Security for Groundhog's Day!

Since the showing of the 1993 film "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray as a tv weatherman, the crowds have expanded, calling for more security. 35,000 people showed up in 1997, filling the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania with five times the population of the Jefferson County's town.

Some fun things to do on Groundhog's Day!

See Mary McCaslin in concert at the Punxsutawney Elks Club, to benefit Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center. Sample some Groundhog Brew, available only at this time of year. Bake some groundhog cookies (cookbook by Elaine Light) or buy a groundhog cookie cutter. Instead of a coonskin cap, treat yourself to a groundhog hat. See some wood carvings of phil. Take the kids on a sleigh ride or play some games.

Celebrate on Punxsutawney Phil's day!
