What is Bao Shi?
Bao Shi is an all-natural formula based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been taking the hair restoration market by storm and has been on the market in the U.S. since 1998. Bao Shi, meaning "precious gem" comes in an easy to take caplet form, providing hair restorative nutrients and herbs that are used in TCM and Ayurveda. Bao Shi is based on an ancient remedy that Asian men and women have used for centuries to maintain healthy, full hair.
Formulated by a Chinese pharmacist, Bao Shi uses whole herbs that are synergistically blended. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses herbs that are combined for a more powerful, therapeutic effect (each herb enhances the action of the other) rather than using single herbs, which are less effective.
How Does It Work?
TCM is based on the principles of Yin and Yang - Yin is cool / feminine and Yang is hot / masculine. Each organ corresponds to an energetic meridian. The main action of Bao Shi balances a deficiency in kidney and liver yin.
Bao Shi comes in three formulations, Original Formula, Advanced Men's and Advanced Women's. There are four herbs that comprise the main formula in each of the products. The formula has general health benefits and performs key actions. It strengthens the capillaries and improves circulation to the body, especially the scalp. This provides an increase in micro-circulation and improves blood and oxygen flow to the hair follicle. It has anti-aging properties that also support the skin and the nails.
Original Bao Shi Formula
The main formula is comprised of Ho Shou Wu, Han Lien Tsao, Fu Ling, and Di Chien Tsao. Ho Shou Wu is the big gun in the formula, proven by clinical studies to actually re-grow hair. The Original Formula is good for both men and women.
Ho Shou Wu is a vine, also called "Chinese Knotweed" and "Fo-Ti." This herb is widely used in TCM to restore the hair. It has even been shown to be effective in treating alopecia, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss. Ho Shou Wu appears to increase the circulation and support the kidney and liver.
Han Lien Tsao, Ayurvedic name Bhringaraj, is also called "Lord of the Hair." It is a creeping, flowering plant. Han Lien Tsao has also been studied for its effects on alopecia. One Chinese study showed that 95% of patients had excessive hair loss stoppage, and 90% had noticeable re-growth of hair.
Di Chien Tsao, Ayurvedic name Brahmi (Gotu Kola), is also called "India Pennywort." Gotu Kola is a leafy plant and is a common tonic herb with many complex healing actions on the tissues and cells, especially the connective tissue. Di Chien Tsao strengthens the skin, hair and nails and improves blood circulation and micro-circulation. It also has a diuretic effect, combating ankle edema.
Poria Cocos, also called "Fu Ling" is a fungus. Fungi are used often in TCM due to the synergistic qualities. Poria Cocos also has powerful anti-inflammatory agents.
Rejuvenating Properties: The basic four formula has a rejuvenating, tonic effect on the whole body, possessing anti-aging properties, so people tend to feel healthier when taking the herbs.
Advanced Bao Shi
The Advanced formulas have been on the market since 2006 and have added B Complex vitamins like B3 and B6, Inositol, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, and Zinc, items known to enhance the hair, skin and nails.
Advanced Men's Bao Shi
The men's formula has added Saw Palmetto. Two caplets provide 640 mg - the amount that has been studied as a DHT blocker. DHT is an androgen made from testosterone and interferes with the hair follicle. As men age, DHT levels rise, and male pattern baldness can follow. It also contains Rosemary, excellent to enhance circulation, and coincidentally, memory.
Advanced Women's Bao Shi
The women's formula adds Nu Zhen Zhi, a gender specific herb that enhances hair color. It is an anti-aging and anti-oxidant herb. It also contains Rosemary and Nettles - a blood cleanser that supports healthy hair and skin.
What Are the Results?
You will see results in your new growth, not existing hair that has already grown. Most people see results in two months, reporting that excessive hair loss has stopped. New hair grows in less gray with a thicker, more lustrous appearance. The product is very helpful for those in menopause and andropause. Use it as a preventative and at the first signs of hair loss. Those who have been bald for years may not see a difference in new hair growth if the hair follicle has been damaged.
I use the product Hair, Skin, Nails - Isn't that enough?
This product is good to support the hair you have, but has not been proven to re-grow it.
Dose:
Original: 3 per day, divided equally on empty stomach, or take 1 in the morning and 2 in evening. Take with serving of light fruit if you don't tolerate supplements on an empty stomach. Most people have no adverse reactions. Always take concentrated herbs with at least 4-8 oz of water.
Advanced: 4 per day - 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening.
Maintenance Dose: After hair reaches the desired result, some people like to take a maintenance dose of 1-2 per day.
You can take this product with other vitamins and minerals. There are no known side effects, unless you have an allergy to eating grasses. (Since 1998, the company has only seen three allergic reactions.)
Where Do I Get Bao Shi?
Get Bao Shi at your local health food store. If your store does not carry it, request that they special order the product for you.
Bao Shi is made by BioMed Health, a family owned business that cares about the quality of its products. Herbs are all natural and organic whenever possible, and all products are vegetarian.
Do I use it? Yes. Do I love it? Yes!

You can also use this product with Rogaine or it's generic, called Minoxidil for men.
Rogaine is a chemical and is not a natural product, but it does work to keep hair if
you are experiencing male pattern baldness due to genetics.
Best of Luck,

If the hair follicle is still viable (alive and intact) it is possible to re-grow the hair naturally with Bao Shi and for an over the counter prescription strength medication, you can also try Rogaine. If the hair follicle is no longer alive, it may not be possible to re-grow the hair. Some prescription medications, health conditions, stress, and hormonal problems can cause the hair to fall out - check with your doctor to be sure.
