Many people enjoy the hobby of gardening. And, in many flower gardens, Aegopodium is a common sight. Although, it may be known as Bishop's Weed to some. Here are some tips to help you grow this perennial in your home garden.

Aegopodium is a fast growing ground cover perennial. It is a member of the parsley family. It loves shady places and dry soil. Aegopodium is an easy plant to get started, if you plant it in the correct environment. Be sure to weed out any plants that have completely green leaves, if you want to keep just the variegated variety. This perennial can take over any flower bed of it is not kept track of carefully.

The perennial known as Bishop's weed, or Aegopodium, will grow to approximately one and a half feet in height. The leaves are four to six inches long are a lovely green, the variegated variety has leaves with white edges. During the summer months, whitish flowers will appear in open two to three inch clusters. The seeds in the flowers will grow, so if you do not want this plant to spread, be sure and remove them before they dry. If you do choose to let them self seed, divide the plants in the spring or fall months.

It can endure partial to full shade, so plant Aegopodium under trees and shrubs. While they have a dense root composition, these plants will not hog the resources from the other plants around them. The bright foliage, especially that of A. podagraria "Variegatum", or the variegated variety, will brighten up any shady spot. If you have a spot that is difficult to get something to grow because of low light and dry soil, Bishop's weed is perfect, especially if you want it to spread on it's own. This perennial will grow best in temperature zones four through nine.

Producing a successful flower garden can be a very rewarding hobby. Along with the flowers, however, some green ground cover is needed to fill in the gaps. It will also make a splendid background for your flowering specimens. The deep green will give a wonderful contrast to the bright colors of the flowering plants. You will find that Aegopodium is a wonderful perennial for this purpose. It is also a way to get some color in an otherwise dark and dreary spot, if you use the variegated variety. Hopefully, these tips will help you grown a wonderful specimen of Bishop's Weed, no matter where you choose to plant.
