Artemisia will grow best in temperature zones 3 to 9. It will grow in height anywhere from 10 inches to 6 feet, depending on the variety you plant in your garden. These plants are very strong spreaders. They can spread anywhere from 6 to 30 inches. Be sure to plan for this when you are planting them. Read the information that comes with your seedlings or seeds to see how much the variety you are planting will spread.
The shape of the plant will vary between species. It can grow into shrubby forms, mounding clumps, or upright spreading clumps. The color of the foliage will be green to silver leaves. There will be small flowers they are yellowish or grayish. They appear in the summer or fall. Be sure to plant your artemisia in a location that will receive full sun. The soil should be average and dry, but well drained.
The foliage of the artemisia is a wonderful addition to any perennial planting. Besides adding texture to your beds, it will also add aroma. The green or silver leaves will contrast with the bright or soft colors of the flowers, especially pinks, reds, and oranges. It will help the colors of the flowers appear brighter and more vibrant.
If you are looking for a foliage plant that is low maintenance, artemisia is for you. Once this plant is established, it is extremely tolerant of drought conditions. Upright varieties tend to do better in warm and humid areas. This is because the mounding varieties will fall open from the center in these hotter conditions. Once any of the varieties begin to lose their form, they should be trimmed back quite a bit to get them back into shape.
Artemisia is a wonderful perennial to add to plantings to fill in between the colorful splashes of flowers. It is an easy plant to grow and will add so much texture to your flower beds. Hopefully, these tips will help you grow great artemisia in your flower gardens, beds, and borders for you and your family to enjoy.
