Mushroom growing kits are sold in a lot of garden centers, but they are usually for other types of mushrooms not the oyster variety. The popular mushrooms that you buy in stores are small and white and are available at quite reasonable prices in grocery stores. The kits are not as economical as we have come to learn. The failure rate that comes with trying these mushrooms is quite high and it is very hard to grow them as opposed to the oyster mushroom.
An oyster mushroom growing kit comes with a straw sack, a cable tie, and a small package of mushroom offspring. Oyster mushrooms are a type of mushroom that tends to always grow; there should be no problem with doing this at home. This makes for even more of a reason to give it a try. They produce mushrooms that have a meaty taste that is somewhat like chicken. Vegetarians love this type of mushroom.
Growing oyster mushrooms at home will generally produce a better tasting mushroom than the ones that you can buy in a store. This is due that they are far fresher and you can use them when and how you want. The stores often have had them sitting for days. It is a general rule of thumb that most things that are grown at home have a better taste than the same thing that is bought in a store.
Oyster mushroom grow kits are extremely easy to use. Begin by opening the straw bag that is provided and pour in some boiling water. Now let this sit for around an hour. After the hour has passed, you need to drain the water out of the bag. Let it cool, and then you can put the mushroom spawn into the bag. Place the bag in a warm place so that the mycelium can start growing through the straw bag. This process takes around two weeks. Once you see this, you can then move it to a cooler, damper area of your home. When they begin to form you can cut the bag, they will appear outside of the bag when they form, and that is all that there is to it. Not too difficult of a process at all.
