Growing Angelonias in Your Houston, Texas Garden

Sally Ann Murphy
Angelonias, or Summer Snapdragons, are a beautiful choice for bringing color to your Houston, Texas garden. Angelonias come from areas such as the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America, so they easily adapt to the Houston, Texas climate. They blossom in colors that include pink, mauve, white, purple, and multicolor. Angelonias are a great choice when you need a taller flower, growing to heights of up to three feet, and do well in containers, too. They have a lovely fragrance, and do very well as cut flowers. If you are interested in adding color and fragrance to your Houston, Texas garden, try some of the varieties below.

Angie Blue. These gorgeous Angelonias bloom with orchid-shaped flowers of blue-violet that are simply breathtaking. They are easy to grow, disease resistant, and will attract butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden. Plant them in full sun in the spring or summer, and enjoy their flowers through the fall. These Angelonias are a great choice for a garden accent plant.

Angelface White. The white flowers of these Angelonias have white and green throats, which will blossom from March through November in your Houston, Texas garden. They do best in full sun, and can reach heights of up to two feet. Angelface White Angelonias do not require any deadheading. They are disease resistant, and will usually survive the Houston, Texas winter without problems. These Angelonias are a great choice for mixed borders.

Angelmist Spreading Pink. Plant these Angelonias in full sun and enjoy their pink blossoms from May through November in your Houston, Texas garden. Disease resistant, drought tolerant and able to take temperatures down to 32 degrees, these beautiful pink Angelonias also do very well in Houston's heat and humidity. A lovely choice for groundcover or mixed borders, these flowers will also bring butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden.

Angelmist Spreading Purple. These hard to kill Angelonias will bloom from March until the first frost in your Houston, Texas garden. They do very well in both dry heat and humidity, and don't mind heavy rains, either. Plant them in full sun to enjoy their beautiful purple flowers, which are often repeat bloomers. These Angelonias do not require deadheading.

Angelface Wedgewood Blue. The gorgeous blue and white flowers of these Angelonias are sure to brighten up your Houston, Texas garden. A repeater bloomer, expect flowers from late spring all the way through the first frost. They are disease resistant, drought tolerant, and will bring butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden. Plant them in full sun for best blooms. They are also heat tolerant and deer resistant, and do very well in containers, too.

Angelmist Lavender Stripe. These hardy purple and white Angelonias are a terrific choice for your Houston, Texas mixed borders, or to use as an accent plant in your garden. They tolerate the heat and humidity of Houston very well, and easily survive the winters, too. Plant them in full sun and keep them watered regularly. These Angelonias are repeat bloomers, and also attract butterflies.
