Growing Dianthus in Your Houston, Texas Garden

Sally Ann Murphy
For color and fragrance, as well as attracting birds, butterflies and bees to your Houston, Texas garden, nothing beats planting beautiful varieties of Dianthus. They blossom in pink, red, white, violet and magenta, and most will easily survive the Houston, Texas winter without any problems. Dianthus do well in containers, as well as in rock gardens, and are an excellent choice for mixed borders, groundcovers, and to use as an accent plant in your Houston, Texas garden. Interested in growing some Dianthus of your own? Try planting some of the varieties below.

Firewitch. This gorgeous Dianthus is hardy to zero degrees (unlikely in Houston, Texas) and will bring butterflies in droves to your garden. Plant them in full sun and enjoy their fuchsia blooms from spring through the fall. These Dianthus are drought tolerant, and survive the Houston, Texas summer with no problems. Use them for mixed borders or ground cover in your garden.

Neon Cherry. The bright cherry blossoms of this Dianthus will bloom from early spring through late fall in your Houston, Texas garden. Plant them in full sun, preferably in well-drained soil, in the spring, summer or fall. Hummingbirds and butterflies love their bright flowers, and this Dianthus does very well in containers. They also make wonderful cut flowers. This is another heat tolerant variety that is a good choice for Houston, Texas gardens.

Neon Duo. The clustered flowers of this Dianthus are a bright mix of cherry and purple, and can be up to seven inches across. Plant them in full to partial sun in your Houston, Texas garden in the fall, and enjoy their blooms all the way until spring. These Dianthus attract butterflies, and are very hardy, both disease resistant and drought tolerant. They are a great choice for rock gardens and mixed borders.

Rose Magic. If you are looking for flowers to attract both butterflies and hummingbirds to your Houston, Texas garden, try planting these lovely Dianthus. The flowers start out white, then turn pink and then a deep rose. They are also very fragrant. Plant them in full sun in the spring, summer or fall, and they will bloom from early spring through the first frost in your Houston, Texas garden. These Dianthus can grow as high as three feet tall.

Corona Cherry Magic. These Dianthus have a wonderful, spicy scent that attracts bees, hummingbirds and butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden. They bloom in a mix of colors that includes cherry, white and fuchsia. Plant them in full sun in early spring or fall, and they will bloom from February through November. This is one of the smaller Dianthus, growing to be about ten inches tall, which makes it a good choice for containers or the front of mixed borders in your Houston, Texas garden.

Dynasty. If you enjoy double-bloomed flowers in bright red, these Dianthus are a good choice for your Houston, Texas garden. Their bright flowers also have a nice scent, and will bring butterflies, hummingbirds and bees to your garden. Plant them in full sun in early spring or fall in your Houston, Texas garden, and they will bloom from March through October. These Dianthus are a good choice as an accent plant for your garden.
