Growing Dutchman's Pipe in Your Houston, Texas Garden

Sally Ann Murphy
Dutchman's Pipe is an interesting and pretty vine to plant in your Houston, Texas garden. Named for their pipe-shaped flowers, they bloom in color combinations such as cream, fuchsia and red, burgundy and white, and others. They also have lovely heart-shaped leaves. The plant family of Dutchman's Pipe, Aristolochia, is large and its different varieties thrive in very diverse climates, so it is important to select ones that do well in Houston, Texas for your garden. These vines make good choices for shade gardens, although many do fine in full sun, and they can climb to heights of over 30 feet. If you think you would enjoy growing Dutchman's Pipe in your own Houston, Texas garden, try planting some of the varieties below.

White Veined (Aristolochia Fimbriata). This perennial vine is a great choice to use as groundcover in your Houston, Texas garden. It has beautiful foliage and flowers that are burgundy and gold. Plant this variety of Dutchman's Pipe in partial sun to bright shade in your Houston, Texas garden, where it will bloom from spring through fall. This vine is the host plant for the Pipe Vine Swallowtail Butterfly, one of the more beautiful Houston, Texas butterflies. The vine will grow to be about ten feet tall.

Calico Flower (Aristolochia Gigantea). The large blooms of this Dutchman's Pipe (up to ten inches in diameter) are a gorgeous burgundy touched with white and gold. This fast growing vine will easily reach heights of 30 feet in your Houston, Texas garden, and will attract butterflies with its beautiful flowers. Plant this Dutchman's Pipe in full sun to partial shade, and it will bloom from summer through fall. It will do best in well-drained soil.

Pelican Flower (Aristolochia Grandiflora). This vine has huge (12" x 8") flowers that are white, painted with bright purple. Plant this Dutchman's Pipe variety in the spring in full sun to partial shade in your Houston, Texas garden, where it will quickly grow to be about fifteen feet tall. This perennial vine will bloom from summer through fall, and survives the Houston, Texas winters without any problems. This vine is a good choice for woodland gardens, but be aware that it is also toxic, so keep pets and small children away.

Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia Trilobata). The flowers of this Dutchman's Pipe bloom in cream, burgundy and fuchsia from spring through the end of fall, and it has beautiful, glossy green leaves, too. It will do best when planted in bright shade in your Houston, Texas garden, where it will quickly reach heights of over 30 feet. The streamers of this Dutchman's Pipe are about twelve inches long.

Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia Durior). Another fast growing vine for your Houston, Texas garden, plant it in full to partial sun and it will grow to be between 20 and 30 feet tall. It has pretty heart-shaped leaves, and its green and yellow flowers will bloom from late spring through the summer. This Dutchman's Pipe variety is deer and rabbit resistant, and is a great choice for a Houston, Texas woodland garden.

Here in Virginia, on my old property, I had a large Dutchman's Pipe vine... Climbing a tree along our driveway, and not far from a Linden Tree.
