Growing Fuchsias in Your Houston, Texas Garden

Sally Ann Murphy
Although Fuchsias do not do so well in the hot Houston, Texas summer, they are a terrific choice for adding color to your garden during late winter through spring. Fuchsias will attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your Houston, Texas garden, and are also a great choice for shade gardens and hanging baskets. You can choose from varieties that bloom in pink, purple, lavender, crimson, orange and many other colors. If you think you would enjoy growing Fuchsias in your own Houston, Texas garden, try planting some of the varieties below.

Bella Rosella. This Fuchsia has beautiful pink and white flowers that will bloom from January through May in your Houston, Texas garden. Plant them in partial sun to light shade in January, where they will attract both butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. These are cascading Fuchsias, which make them a lovely choice for rock gardens or hanging baskets. They can handle the cold down to 35 degrees, but you should cover them if it gets any colder.

Deep Purple. This is another Fuchsia that looks beautiful in hanging baskets or rock gardens. Plant it in partial sun to light shade in mid-January, and it will bloom all the way to the end of May. Its flowers are purple, white and rose colored, and will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden. These Fuchsias take the cold down to 35 degrees; after that, cover them up. This is a good choice for an accent plant in your garden.

Dollar Princess. The beautiful purple and crimson flowers of this Fuchsia will add a striking note to your Houston, Texas garden. A little hardier than most Fuchsias, they tolerate cold down to 25 degrees. Plant them in light shade or partial sun in your Houston, Texas garden, where they will bloom from mid-January to the end of May. These Fuchsias grow more upright than many other varieties, but still look pretty in hanging baskets and other containers.

Gartenmeister Bonstedt. If you are looking for a striking accent plant for your shade garden or mixed border, try planting this Fuchsia in your Houston, Texas garden. Plant it in full to partial shade in late fall through the early spring, and enjoy its orange and red tubular flowers during the summer and fall. These Fuchsias take the Houston, Texas heat better than most, but should still not be planted in full sun. The flowers attract both butterflies and hummingbirds. These Fuchsias grow to be about three feet tall, so they are a good choice for the back of your Houston, Texas mixed border.

Lena. This Fuchsia is the perfect choice for your Houston, Texas window boxes or container gardens. Their beautiful rose and purple flowers blossoms from mid-January through the end of May, and will tolerate cold temperatures down to 25 degrees. Like all Fuchsias, they will bring butterflies and hummingbirds to your Houston, Texas garden. These are good choices for both container gardens and shade gardens. Plant them in full sun to partial shade.
