Growing Up Hard

Shelia West
When I was a young girl
I often felt much shame
For we were very poor
Not a penny to our name.

I wore second hand clothes
And much worn old shoes
I knew I should be thankful
But everything just felt used.

During school's morning break
I had no pennies to be spent
So I would remain in my seat
Chocolate milk cost three cents.

There was never enough food
Too many mouths to feed.
But Mommy did her very best
To fulfill our basic needs.

You may think I'm complaining
But you'd be so very wrong
Cause growing up hard
Just made me strong.
