Growing an Indoor Garden

Indoor Gardening Ideas for Small Spaces

W. Smith
If you are like me and want to grow some of your own food but you have been living in apartments for the last forever of your life with no end in sight. Then try some or all of these ideas - they don't take a lot of space and are relatively easy to do.

Indoor Herb Garden

This is probably the most basic idea that we think of when we think of indoor gardening. This is for good reason. It is extremely simple:

• Purchase a plastic or terra cotta planting pot (or use on you already have) that will fit in the space you have set aside for your "indoor garden." This space should be near a sunny window but not under a heating or cooling vent.

• Add drainage materials to the bottom of your planter and then cover with good quality potting soil.

• After you have your planter ready select the herbs you want to plant and then plant them following the directions on the plastic card.

• Make sure you save the plastic card(s) and stick them in your planter so you remember what you planted

Growing Almost Anything Indoors

You can grow just about anything you want indoors. You only real limitation is space. Plants need the same things whether they are inside or outside...so as long as you provide sunlight, water and good soil you will be good to go. For example you may not be able to grow a bag of potatoes but you could grow one potato. Just figure out what you want to grow then head to your local nursery or "Master Gardeners" Extension in your area, explain what you want to grow and they will help you with all the sizes of planters, soil amounts et cetera. The main thing is to remember to keep it simple. You probably can't plant a whole garden, but having some "home grown" lettuce or carrots every once in awhile sure can be nice.
