Growing Ivy in Your Houston, Texas Garden

Sally Ann Murphy
There are many different varieties of Ivy that will do very well in your Houston, Texas garden, where they often grow to heights of 50 feet or more. Some prefer sun, some prefer shade, and some types of Ivy will do just fine in both. Some Ivy will bloom with color and others will just delight you with their cool, green leaves. You can use some types of Ivy to cover whole sides of your house, or to just trail delicately up a trellis in a corner of your garden. If you are looking for Ivy to grow in your own Houston, Texas garden, try planting some of the varieties below.

Algerian. This perennial vine does best when planted in full shade or filtered sunlight. It does not like the afternoon Houston, Texas sun. Plant this variety in soil with good drainage, and it will grow to heights of 30 feet or more. This Ivy is very hardy, and will survive the Houston, Texas winter without any problems.

Boston. If you are looking for Ivy that will reach heights of 50 feet or taller, try planting this variety. It does best when planted in full or partial sun, and will cling nicely to whatever structure you plant it beside. This vine also has beautiful fall foliage for your Houston, Texas garden. It will do best in fertile soil with humus, and survives the Houston winters without any issues.

English. Keep this Ivy well watered in your Houston, Texas garden and it will grow to be 30 feet or more high. It prefers to be planted in full shade or filtered sun, and does best in soil with good drainage. You can plant this vine in your Houston, Texas garden from fall through spring, and this is another variety that does not mind the Houston winters.

Geranium. The pink, red, purple and white flowers of this Ivy are sure to brighten your Houston, Texas garden. This annual vine will grow to be about four feet tall, and its blooms are very fragrant. Although this Ivy likes the cooler weather of Houston, Texas, it will not survive an extended freeze. Plant this vine in full sun in your garden, and it will bloom from May through September.

Kenya. Another flowering Ivy for your Houston, Texas garden, this variety has yellow flowers that will bloom from spring through the first frost. Plant this Ivy in full sun to partial shade, where it will do best if compost is mixed into the soil. It also has very beautiful glossy green leaves. Kenya does very well on a trellis, and is also a great choice for hanging baskets.
