Growing Pentas in Your Houston, Texas Garden

Sally Ann Murphy
Pentas are a great choice for a Houston, Texas garden. Many varieties are sun-loving and drought tolerant, and in our climate some of the annuals can become perennials. Pentas bloom in colors that include red, white, rose, purple and pink, and some of these lovely flowers will attract butterflies or hummingbirds (or both!) to your Houston, Texas garden. Depending on the variety you plant, you can have blooms in the spring, summer or fall, and some Pentas will bloom in all three seasons. If you think you might enjoy growing some Pentas in your own Houston, Texas garden, try planting some of the varieties below.

Butterfly White. These Pentas have beautiful white flowers that will attract butterflies, hummingbirds and bees to your Houston, Texas garden. Plant them in full sun in the spring, and enjoy their flowers from late spring through early fall. These Pentas will grow to be about two feet tall, and are a great choice for an accent plant or in your Houston, Texas container garden. They do best in well-drained soil.

New Look. This gorgeous Penta series is available in flowers of pink, red, white, purple and rose. They can stand temperatures down to 32 degrees, and are disease resistant and drought tolerant. These Pentas will also bring butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden. Plant them in full sun to partial shade in spring or early summer, and they will bloom from April through October. These Pentas are a good choice for shade gardens, groundcover, or mixed borders.

Butterfly Series. If you are looking for low maintenance flowers for your Houston, Texas garden, try planting any of the Pentas from this series. They are drought tolerant and do not mind the Houston summer heat, and are also very resistant to pests. Plant them in the spring or summer in full sun to partial shade, and enjoy their beautiful flowers from late spring through the fall. These Pentas will also bring butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden. Use them as an accent plant in your garden, or as part of a mixed border.

Egyptian Star Flower. Named for their star-shaped flowers, these Pentas will bloom from spring through early fall. The pink blossoms will also draw hummingbirds and butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden. Be sure to plant them in full sun or partial shade, preferably in well-drained soil. These Pentas do very well in containers, and are drought tolerant once they are established.

Graffiti Deep Red. If you enjoy bright red flowers, try planting these Pentas in your Houston, Texas garden. The star-shaped blooms will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden, and are a beautiful addition to mixed borders. These Pentas also make a gorgeous accent plant in your Houston, Texas garden, and do very well in containers. Plant them in full sun to partial shade in the spring or summer, and they will bloom from spring through the first frost. They will also survive a mild Houston, Texas winter without damage.
