Growing Snapdragons in Your Houston, Texas Garden

Sally Ann Murphy
Snapdragons, or Antirrhinum, are colorful and easy to grow flowers that are sure to brighten up your Houston, Texas garden. (Snapdragons are not the same as Angelonias, which are also known as summer snapdragons.) They bloom with gorgeous pink, purple, yellow, red and white flowers, and are the perfect choice for winter gardens, as most varieties will bloom from October through June in your garden. Snapdragons are very hardy flowers, and survive the Houston, Texas winters without any problems. They blossom readily in full to partial sun. Snapdragons are a beautiful choice for mixed borders, container gardens, or anywhere you need a splash of winter color. If you think you would enjoy growing Snapdragons in your Houston, Texas garden, try planting some of the varieties below.

Twinny Peach
. This award-winning Snapdragon is the perfect choice for your Houston, Texas garden. They have double butterfly blossoms that include shades of peach, pale orange, apricot, and soft yellow. These Snapdragons are heat and drought tolerant, making them a great choice for Houston, Texas gardens. They are also disease resistant, and can tolerate temperatures down to 25 degrees (unlikely in Houston, Texas.) Plant them in full sun and enjoy their blossoms from September through May, and sometimes into June. These Snapdragons are a beautiful choice for groundcover or mixed borders in your garden.

Solstice Yellow
. If you love yellow flowers, you'll love this Snapdragon, which has bright yellow lower petals and peachy-yellow upper petals. Plant it in full sun to partial shade, and this Snapdragon will blossom from fall through spring in your Houston, Texas garden. Its beautiful blooms make great cut flowers, too. These Snapdragons will grow to be almost two feet tall, and will also attract butterflies in your Houston, Texas garden. They are a terrific choice for a container garden, or to use as an accent plant in your garden.

Rocket
. This tall Snapdragon can grow as high as three feet tall, and can benefit from being staked. This is the perfect choice for your Houston, Texas mixed borders, and its startling red flowers are also great as an accent plant. Plant these Snapdragons in full to partial sun and they will bloom from September through May in your Houston, Texas garden.

Sonnet
. The pretty pink, white, red and yellow flowers of these Snapdragons will bloom from fall through spring in your Houston, Texas garden. Plant them in full sun and they will grow to be about two feet tall. These Snapdragons are a great choice for container gardens, and also look very beautiful in a Houston, Texas mixed border.

Montego. While not as tall as other types of Snapdragons, Montego is a multiple bloomer, and its red, yellow, white and multicolor blooms are the perfect choice for your Houston, Texas hanging baskets. These Snapdragons prefer to be planted in full sun, although they will tolerate partial shade, too. They are also a great choice for groundcover in your Houston, Texas garden. Be sure to keep them well watered.
