Growing Vinca in Your Houston, Texas Garden

Vinca, also known as Periwinkle, are a terrific choice for Houston, Texas gardens. They thrive in the heat and humidity of Houston, and most varieties are also drought tolerant. They prefer to be planted in full sun, and Vinca also do best in soil with good drainage. Plant them in the spring in your Houston, Texas garden and they will bloom from early summer through late fall. Vinca flower in red, purple, pink and white, and are usually prolific bloomers. Most Vinca grow to be over a foot tall, sometimes reaching heights of two feet, and they will reseed themselves. Some Houston, Texas gardeners find Vinca to be invasive, but if you cut them back in the fall you can easily control them. Overall, these are easy to grow, minimal care plants that will add lots of color to your garden. If you would like to grow Vinca in your own Houston, Texas garden, try planting some of the varieties below.

Cora Collection. These Vinca love the Houston, Texas heat and humidity, and are also disease resistant. They bloom in lavender, pink, white, apricot, fuchsia, and multicolor, and have beautiful leaves as well. Plant these Vinca in full sun in your Houston, Texas garden, where they will bloom all summer. They are a great choice for an accent plant, and also do very well in containers. These Violas are also Texas Superstars. They will grow to be about sixteen inches tall, and two feet wide.

Nirvana Series
. Another Texas Superstar, this variety of Vinca is disease resistant, drought tolerant, and loves the Houston, Texas humidity. They are also deer resistant. Plant these Vinca in full sun, and they will bloom from late spring through fall in your Houston, Texas garden. These are a perfect choice for groundcover, or to use in a rock garden. They bloom in pink, red, white, multicolor, and many other colors. Nirvana Vinca prefer well drained soil, and should be planted in late spring in your garden. Expect heights of up to eighteen inches.

Peppermint Cooler
. If you are looking for red and white flowers to brighten your Houston, Texas garden, try planting this variety of Vinca. Heat and drought tolerant, they are a great choice for mixed borders or to use in your container garden. Plant them in full sun and they will bloom from June through November in your Houston, Texas garden. These Vinca have very pretty leaves, a soft green with white mid veins. Be sure to plant them in well drained soil. This is a smaller variety of Vinca, growing to be about eight inches tall, so plant them in the front of your mixed border.
