Grown Up

April Fox
when i grow up
i want to be beautiful
perfect hair
perfect teeth
and a figure that doesn't make me turn away
and hide
even in the dark
even in love

when i grow up
i want a voice that people hear
and listen to
thoughts in order, not fighting for their place
first in line
not held back for fear of being wrong
i want to make sense
at least some of the time

when i grow up
i want to be huge
big enough to fight away the scary things
big enough to scream enough
big enough to matter

when i grow up
i want to sing
loudly, clear
i want to be a lullaby
to myself

when i grow up
i want to feel the way i look
when i put on the hip-ass-shake
walking down the road alone
not like now
shrinking invisible lady hiding

when i grow up
i want to know
with absolute certainty
the right thing
i want to kill the questions-
i want to know
for sure.
