Grown from Seed: the Power of New Life

Writer M J Joachim
The tiniest thing, a seed, has an enormous impact on the earth it inhabits. It can grow into new life offering food and shelter to those who need it. It attracts other creations to its beauty, often getting rides to different places. Seeds are powerful little specks, which take on lives of their own when let loose in the world.

Their work is to take root, spreading wildly underground, in a maze of twists and turns amidst other creatures of the dark. All the while, they draw attention to the beauty of their flowers in the sun, flowers that will generate new seed from their exotic appearance and scent.

Seeds are fundamental to the growth and development of life. They are also symbolic of the spirit, beginning so humbly, cast down by others, only to rise again, bigger, stronger, and better than before. Seeds are concrete and abstract, while maintaining the ability to infiltrate and conquer entire communities.

Their journey takes place when they fall to ground through forces well beyond them. Strong winds may open their drying pods, which cling to the strength of a parent plant. Birds and other animals may feast on them, only to eliminate them in their travels. People will harvest them, preferring to manage where and how they grow.

All the while, new life is waiting for the perfect moment to be released. Handled and driven by forces far beyond them, seeds begin a journey into the unknown that takes them to places of toil and peace, danger and tranquility, heartache and dreams. There, amidst power and submission, seeds begin to grow, altering the world around them.

Basking in the victory of conquest, the world does not see the mighty forces of the seed, slowly reaching out into the darkness of its plight. There, beneath the soil that has covered death, seeds take on a life of their own, reaching out to claim their territory in the earth. Rains fall, offering refreshment as roots take hold, changing the landscape around them.

The tiny seed awakens, sending forth roots that reach down and move the earth which clings to their fragile frame. Feasting on nutrients of death, these roots push and maneuver their way through the soil, challenging every obstacle in their path. As their strength increases, the ominous seed opens itself to the possibility of new life, and stretches forth to feel the warmth of the sun.

Ever so innocently, she pokes her head out, and sits in the glory of light. She is hardly noticeable, as her roots keep her firmly in place, feeding the plant that will be. These roots continue to grow stronger helping her make a difference in the world. She is delicate, tender, strong and powerful as she grows. Life flocks to the seemingly harmless beauty that will change its course forever.

A little thistle or thorn develops to protect her from the many predators that would dare to threaten this magnificent creation. The seed manifest a life of its own, as it feeds on the world around it. Taking clues from fears that penetrate every sensible response, the seed offers doubt to those who are certain. Without warning, she cast her shadow on the weak, to take them down.

All the while, her strength is failing as she gives way to the cycle of life. New pods develop in the wake of her daring stance. She is weakened by the weight of new life that will follow the path she has forged, a path of destiny which revealed her true worth. Future generations will spring forth creating different legacies. These legacies will have the power to overcome everything that preceded them, but not unscathed.

The seed, once so strong and impenetrable, withers beneath the elements of life. She has become food of the soil, nourishment for those who will grow and change the world after she has long been forgotten. Yet, that little seed still lives, despite the many transformations which have altered her
appearance. Generations are affected by her very existence that has just begun to infiltrate the composition of the soil.
