VSS and PQMedia teamed up to conduct a comprehensive study of how and where people spend their time using media. The Internet is the overall winner as it keeps growing each and every year. This year 5.1% of people spend their time on the internet while newspapers and recorded music each moved down to 4.9%.
People are beginning to love the internet and spend a greater proportion of their time on it instead of reading newspapers, attending movies, listening to music or any other media activities. In lieu of going out people now stay home and browse the internet. Digital marketing is becoming big business.
Previous to this year the two top advertising mediums were newspapers who received $55.7 billion dollars of Advertisement revenue and television which received $48.7 billion dollars worth of revenue. The estimate is that by 2011, or in 4 more years, Internet advertising will become the largest source of advertising being worth 63 billion dollars.
What does all of this mean for online news sources?
As the internet becomes more influential, as the subscriber base grows and as companies spend their advertising dollars on the Internet major changes are going to happen to the media power structure. Online companies will end up earning more revenue and supplanting traditional sources.
If you own an online business that offers articles, news or high quality content you will likely earn more money in the future. Before you can earn this money you will have to set up your business to handle the needs of marketers. That means they should be able to find you as well as have easy access to placing marketing requests.
Your site should be content rich and designed to attract the most visitors. The advertisements can go in between the articles or embedded within them. In many cases you might even be able to make money doing product reviews. Other type of advertising income includes links, html, viral marketing and pay per click. Experiment with each kind to find the one that pulls in the most revenue.
