Growth Stages of a Babies - Birth Up to Five Months

My cousin gave birth to a baby girl about 17 months ago and it was an exciting time for herself as well as her husband as it was their first child. She kept a record of what her baby could and couldn't do, from the time she was born up until now. Being a first time mother, she wasn't exactly sure what to expect and wanted to save every memory she had with her baby, so keeping track of everything her daughter did became extremely exciting for her. She was a full time mother so she could devote all of her time to her new baby. So I would like to share this information with you. It is what went on during the first 5 months after the baby's birth.

During the first month of her baby's life, she noticed that her daughter enjoyed sleeping most of the time as well as drinking milk from a bottle. During this time the baby would react to loud music or when something would fall down, for example if a book was knocked off a table. The baby also began to sneeze and have the hiccups frequently. Her daughter wasn't able to fully hold her head up and my cousin had to assist her with this. My cousin also began exposing her to classical music because friends and family mentioned that it would help with the baby's development.

During the second month, the baby began to cry when she was hungry, wet or just felt uncomfortable. She also began to recognize the voices of her mother as well as her father. Throughout this time, my cousin noticed that her baby was able to lift her head up just a little on her own.

During the third month, the baby starts to recognize colors like red, black and white. Her favorite seems to be red and black. The baby likes moving objects such as a toy car. She begins to smile, giggles and is able to hold a rattle securely in her little hand. The baby is able to turn on her side but only to the left.

While the baby is in her fourth month, she starts to coo and smile when someone is talking to her. If her mother is walking around, she follows her with her eyes.

During the fifth month, she can finally turn on both sides, not just the left. The baby is now able to reach for objects and wants to put them in her mouth so her mother keeps a very close watch on her. The baby's weight has risen. At birth she was 6.6 pounds and now at five months of age, the baby is 14 pounds. Her baby also starts to show dislike for foods, she would rather have a banana than a potato.

My cousin's doctor was quite pleased with the journal she kept of her baby. The doctor said that everything was normal and these stages were in tune with that of a regular baby. Every mother should do this, not just to savor every memory but to make sure your baby is progressing as she or he would.
