GSP Vs. Penn 2: The Most One-Sided Fight in UFC History?

There have been many mismatches in MMA, but is GSP vs. Penn 2 the most one-sided fight in UFC history?

The fight ended with BJ Penn throwing in the towel, or should I say his brother and trainer throwing in the towel for him. That's how exhausted and beat up Penn was during that fight after he was battered by GSP on the ground.

Penn charged that GSP was "greased up" during that fight but it likely wouldn't have mattered as GSP's wrestling was too much for Penn and his size was overwhelming as Penn is a natural lightweight and GSP is a welterweight.

But there are a few other fights that come to mind in the UFC when discussing the most one-sided fight in UFC history.

One that stands out is Anderson Silva against Chris Leben. Everyone knows that Leben can take a punch like no one else, but as Leben showed in this fight in 2006, he can also take a ton of knees as well.

Silva roughed him up every way possible, making a good fighter in Leben look like a child in this one. Leben has bounced back and he's shown a lot of toughness and skill since that fight, however.

Another fight that stands out in this discussion is the Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida title fight at UFC 98. This fight is noteworthy for many reasons but mainly because it was the champ, Evans, who was made to look like the challenger by Machida. Evans lost just about every exchange and the image of him slumped on the canvas near the fence after being brutally KO'd will stick in many fans' minds for a long time.

Evans has rebounded in a big way, however.

But the pick here for biggest one-sided fight in UFC history to me is Michael Patt vs. Brandon Vera at UFC 96. As I watched in person cageside, I couldn't help but cringe as I watched Patt get surgically destroyed by Vera's leg kicks.

The much-slower Patt couldn't even get near Vera as he kicked him repeatedly in both legs. Vera kicked him over and over again and at one point Patt was crawling on the mat after Vera after being felled by a leg kick.

Near the end of the fight it was clear as day that Patt was hobbling too much and had no chance of landing any strikes on Vera, yet the fight continued. Vera finished it with a crushing leg kick to Patt's left leg that sent him to the canvas yet again as the ref stepped the fight.

Vera could have jumped in and ground-and-pound him, but the ref decided he had seen enough as Patt simply was incapable of defending himself from any more leg kicks. The ref essentially threw in the towel for Patt in this one and cemented an embarrassing loss in which Vera completely outclassed his clueless opponent.

While GSP vs. Penn 2 will get a lot of votes for the most one-sided fight in UFC history, the Patt-Vera one will always hold the title to me because of how helpless and non-threatening Patt appeared in the fight.
