Thoughts of summer bring to mind those memories of the fruit associated with cool treats. Those big, red, sweet, luscious watermelons enjoyed when we were kids

Watermelons are cropped in almost 85% of the states in the United States. The watermelons that you buy in the west probably came from California or Arizona. If you are in the mid west or east in the United States the watermelon on your table has most likely come from Florida or Georgia. Out of season, watermelons are available in supermarkets. These are in all probability grown in Mexico. The season for watermelons is from May to October. The best time to purchase them is from May to August when the crop is at its peak.

Watermelons are also available in the seedless variety. Seedless watermelons guaranteed to be have been grown organically are difficult to find.

Important Points To Consider

If you delve a bit deeper, you will discover that there is no such thing as a guaranteed organic seedless watermelon. These watermelons are grown from chemically, genetically modified seeds. The chemical used is Colchicines, an alkaloid extracted from the seeds of the autumn crocus plant. Treatment by this chemical results in changing of the number of chromosomes from two to four. These seeds are then crossed with the natural two-chromosome watermelon, resulting in a watermelon with three chromosomes. If you dig further, you will find that plants need a pair of chromosomes to propagate. Since the modified watermelon has an odd number of chromosomes, it does not produce seeds, thus the seedless watermelon.

After reading all this, it is possible that you may have to redefine your meaning of the term "organic". You have to decide how far in the chain of bringing the farm produce to your table you have to go, in order to define organic. It is possible that the seeds used for growing watermelons were treated with chemicals.
