To get started, believe it or not, you need to submit your site to the Yahoo Directory. That's right, Yahoo!
These two companies have an agreement that states that any site indexed in the Yahoo directory is guaranteed to be listed in the Google index as well.
DMOZ.org is another way to get listed in the Google Index. They too have an agreement with Google that states that any site indexed in the DMOZ directory will be added to the Google Index.
Oddly enough, Google does not index all sites submitted via their 'submit a site' form. So even if you've already submitted your site, it doesn't mean your site will be in their index.
