Believing in God's Messengers

Sherri Granato
Believing in guardian angels can be a difficult concept for many people unless you have had a brush with one at some point in your life, know someone who has been graced by their protective powers or you were raised with the mind set that they simply do exist. These fantastic and inspirational beings give us both hope and guidance when all other outlets in a hopeless situation have failed us.

This all of course is based on the mere fact that they truly do exist and that we actually do believe that they walk amongst us. It can be hard to believe in the unseen, but accounts from people that have experienced unusual events that changed their life due to a simple act that was unexplainable makes you think twice about the possibility.

Stories covering death defying circumstances have forced us all to take a closer look at the very real concept that angels do walk with us in our time of need and it gives us a glimmer of hope that we are forever watched over. Television has brought us various shows with a theme featuring angels from Touched by an Angel and Highway to Heaven to real life stories featured on Unsolved Mysteries where an angel was believed to be a life saver. Some things are just to obvious to ignore and this just happens to be one of them.

Accounts from millions of people through time have given us hope that there is something out there bigger then any of us could ever hope for. Many religious circles would stake their lives on it that it is none other then God or his will in a particular situation, but the rest of know that it is one of his messengers watching over all that has gone wrong and touching a life that will somehow forever be changed from a single event.

This is of course is Gods will that guardian angels exist and that they have the power to protect, guide, love and change our life in a way that marks a permanent memory to those graced by its powers and that something phenomenal has just occurred to the person touched. Many of these same people describe a guardian angel as one who is a spiritual being that comes dressed with a full set of wings that brings peace to a troubled mind without asking any questions.

The word angel is derived from the Greek word Angelos which simply means messenger, and it is a spirit with no body. Guardian angels are believed to be intellectual by nature, powerful by will, and holy. Studies have shown that they can take on any physical form of their liking to best suit the needs of the person suffering and in search of an immediate answer or help in an unexpected situation.

So whether you are a believer in the guardian angels dedication to serve humans desiring answers or aid, it is a pleasing thought to know that the possibility of millions of heavenly souls in search of healing the pain of others, and guiding us from harmful situations is a definite possibility and gives each of us something uniquely ours to look for. Guardian angels are not to be worshipped.

They are like a personal tour guide that walks with you through life. The love of guardian angels came directly from people who had personally dealt with trials and tribulations in their life and knew they had been touched by something of a higher power. This belief system in angels during the Middle Ages stirred up an "angel mania" of sorts with claims of sightings of winged angels and saints from thousands of earnest believers everywhere.

The History and Concept of Guardian Angels

Believers feel strongly that guardian angels are always prepared to listen and follow through with God's Word. Their undying love for God moves them to protect and guard what is most precious to Him, us.

According to scripture found within the Old Testament, the guardian angel concept is clearly present and its development is well marked.

The career of a guardian angel is to protect and guide a particular living soul. The belief in guardian angels can be traced back to before the Middle Ages. The concept of these angels and their hierarchy was extensively developed in Christianity in the 5th century by the Syrian monk Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite.

A study on guardian angels conducted by the Baylor University Institute for Studies of Religion revealed that more than half of all Americans believe they have been touched by a guardian angel at some point in their lives. Out of 1,700 respondents to a similar study based on subject matter involving guardian angels, 55% agreed that they were protected from harm by a guardian angel.

Angels are mentioned in the Bible close to 300 times. Of these angels there are thought to be around 30 different types ranging from Principalities to Seraphim's, and Dominions to Cherubim's.

Angels are found throughout the Book of Revelation executing God's wrath or Revelation 15:1

Never drive faster then your guardian angel can fly.

According to Robert Graham, in his article "Angel Talk-Are You Listening", he suggests that we all have guardian angels that are willing to communicate with us, but that most of the time we are just too busy to listen. If we are attentive, he says, and are willing to remain open to this communication, we can receive subtle messages that can help us in our daily lives.

One of the most popular angels is Michael. He is the archangel whose name means "who is as God."

One of my favorite books is a little Hallmark gift book with true stories of angels. When I taught a 6th grade religious education class, they couldn't get enough of those stories. They would beg me to read them. I think children are more open to angels and other spiritual things.

Excellent job on this! I have no doubt about the existence of angels and in particular, guardian angels. It would be a better world if everyone knew what we know! Wonderful article and super read! :)

Very interesting! According to the Bible angels have spacial location but do not occupy space. During an exorcism, a demon very bitterly complained that God had sent 40,000 angels to guard the congregation that night before it left its victim. How could 40,000 angels get into that building? That how.
