What better way to enjoy a good book than to feel a personal connection with the author? Birmingham's Baldwin Public Library, 300 West Merill, is offering a double opportunity at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Folks who want to get to know Kristina Riggle will need to see her in person, because her online biography mysteriously identifies her only as someone who "lives and writes in West Michigan" without naming her hometown. She is introducing her second novel "The Life You've Imagined," set in the fictional town of Haven, Mich., which apparently is an amalgamation of Grand Haven and other small towns along Lake Michigan's shore. The state's economic woes are not limited to the auto towns on the eastern side along Interstate 75, and Riggle's quartet of characters comprise three friends and a a mother linked in a dying family business. Publishers Weekly praised her debut novel, "Real Life & Liars," for "humorous and humane storytelling."

Also appearing at Baldwin Public Library is Katrina Kittle of Dayton, Ohio, who continues to promote her third novel, "The Kindness of Strangers," a first-prize winner in the Great Lakes Book Awards. Her main character is a young widow who digs deep emotionally to keep two children on track while she maintains a catering business to pay he family's bills. She becomes foster parent to a third child when a friend encounters a family tragedy. People Magazine has offered praise: "Kittle's clear prose gives a luminous quality to her story of thriving against the odds."

Admission to the event is free of charge.
