Guest Room Essentials

Lauren Romano
A few essential items in a guest room can mean the difference between a guest feeling uneasy and feeling completely welcome and comfortable. While staying in your guest room, a guest should to feel more at home and less like a visitor. Many already know the importance of incorporating a bed, dresser, chair and end table, but it is the small details that can bring the room to life and leave your visitor satisfied.

Basket of Snacks

A guest should have the option to go to the kitchen, but it should never be mandatory. A basket with peanuts, chocolate, some fruit and cookies can help to squelch the guest's desire for snacks. For refreshments, a few bottles of water, a small bottle of soda, a mug, and teabags will do.

Candles

When lit, one or two sets of candles can help give the guest room a calming feel. Put white or cream pillar candles on a dark tray and surround the bottom of them with neutral or dark colored rocks. Put a pack of matches next to the base of the tray where they are easily visible.

Extra Pillows

Everyone, including your guest, has a preference of how many pillows to use while sleeping. Keep at least four extra pillows, along with corresponding pillowcases, in the closet of the guest room should the guest need them. They may help the visitor have a more restful and comfortable night's sleep.

Blankets

It is essential to make sure your guests are comfortable whether they are reading or sleeping. Several blankets throughout the room can leave no doubt that they will be. Put one blanket across the base of the bed and another in the closet. Place a throw blanket on the chair in case a heavier blanket is too warm.

Alarm Clock

An alarm clock in the guest room offers the guest the convenience of getting up when necessary without fumbling for a cell phone to see the time or having to set a personal alarm. Make sure that the numbers on the clock are large enough so that even those with slight vision problems or sleepy eyes can see them.

A clean, comfortable, carefully designed guest room stocked with the essentials reflects well on you and your abilities as a host. Knowing that the room is welcoming can leave both you and your guest with a feeling of satisfaction long after the visit is over.

Any guest in your house who had access to all these special items would feel very welcome and happy.

Great tips. I slept in my guestroom for a month last year due to illness and had it made up so nice, I didn't want to leave. But, I eventually missed spooning with hubby.
