To promote yourself as an opera singer, you would have to step out and sing to show your talent. The best way is exposing yourself to friends and family because you never know who they know to get to the next step. Another way is to audition for professional talent shows such as American Idol or other professional talent shows. In Illinois, downtown Chicago have the Opera House which you can call to get information on how to become a talent in there shows or try auditioning at the Monastero's Ristorante and Banquets. Every spring, Monastero's Ristorante hosts their Bel Canto Opera Competition in the Botticelli Room. For more information you can call Monastero's Ristorante and Banquets at 773-588-2515 and they will be able to give information on this particular event. Another great way to becoming an opera singer is to volunteer to sing at an art gallery nearby or a park that's having an event. Always have cards available and developed before you perform. When people hear your beautiful voice, they are going to want a card from you and this is a great way to promote yourself as a professional.
However, before becoming a great opera singer, you will need the skills to exceed in this profession. If you are taking up music performance as an opera singer like me, you would need to do and understand certain things to perform as an opera singer.
Pitch and intonation works hand in hand to develop excellent open vowels. Rhythmic accuracy is very important to execute an opera song. Tempo, phrasing of sentences in a measure, articulation of languages including English is important. Your diction and dynamics in an opera song is very, very important. One of the most important things you have to execute as an opera singer is interpretation of song through seeing the character you are expressing and of course you must have excellent breath support, tone quality, memorization, sight singing, and interaction with the accompanist and stage presence.
To develop all of these techniques, you may want to find a really good music teacher either through a college or university or find a private music teacher to help you develop your singing skills. Also, it would be a good idea to join a choir at your church or join a professional choir who sings with an orchestra per say. If you don't understand the foreign songs you are singing, you may want to go online to find lieder of music to understand the interpretation of the songs you are going to sing. This way you can see what the song is trying to say or express. You may want an encyclopedia of opera music to understand the history behind the music you need to execute like what scenes took place before the female or male character started singing? For example, the song, "O Mio Babbino Caro" is a song that is by Giacomo Puccini and was done in the late Romanic period. To make a long story short before the character Lauretta sings this aria, she pleads with her father for help hoping she will have approval from Rinnucio's family to marry him. If you are an opera singer, you would need to express the emotion greatly in your aria or song in an opera or on stage period.
If you are not a natural born actor or actress, you may want to register for an acting class or audition for other musical plays that will help you develop this skill.
Lastly, inform yourself as an opera singer. Read up on all the different structures of opera music and the industry. Scrutinize all the opera performances by going to an opera yourself. Watch how the professional opera singers perform on stage and listen to how they pronounce words and how they express themselves and such. Talk to opera singers who have been successful as an opera singer.
