Infant shoes must be flexible. Having some give to the shoe is very important, especially in the sole of the shoe. Try looking for something with a strong fabric top and flexible rubber sole. Something breathable for the upper part of the baby shoe is best. Canvas, fabric or soft leather usually work best.

Light
The shoes you pick for your baby should be light weight. Buying a baby shoe that is to heavy and clunky will be more difficult for your new walker to toddle around in. Look for something virtually weightless, with a thin sole. A flat sole is best.

They don't need a whole lot of room in the back of the shoe just enough to prevent excessive friction. Lastly, check the top of the shoe to make sure you can pinch a little bit of the fabric away from the foot. Having room for movement in the shoe is very important.
