After a few days moping, I began to search online for the next best alternative: wall decals and cute nursery hangings. Lighten up, if you too are forbidden to paint, or just simply don't want to, the nursery doesn't have to be a drab home for your newest addition to the family. Several sites offer cute and fun alternatives.
Wall decals
Wall decals are removable large stickers. They seem to be gaining popularity as the last few years has brought more online buzz and stores selling them. The decals are usually so easy to put up, I'm almost excited to not have to go through the mess and fuss of painting.
My online search for the best, most reasonably priced nursery wall decor led me to several wall decal sites. I even found a couple of online tutorials about do-it yourself wall decals. Frankly, I'm just not that crafty, so I continued my search and limited myself to decals for sale.
Blik sells not only decals aimed at babies and children, but decals for almost everywhere from dining room tables to knick-knacks. The decals are mainly whimsical with some of the themes including Nintendo, Giant Robot and Of Montreal. This is a great place to get inspiration for a nursery theme as well. Why not go for something out of the norm like a retro Nintendo nursery theme?
As for me, I'm set on a cherry blossom theme. As soon as I found that we're expecting a girl December 2009, I knew she'd have a cherry blossom theme.
I decided to hit up etsy.com. For those of you completely oblivious to online shopping trends. Etsy is a popular supplier of handmade goods. I searched the site for "cherry blossom wall decals," but the site offers much more than cherry blossoms.
I'm still deciding which designs I'm going to use in the nursery, but some of my favorites were from seller's DesignerWall Art, a good bargain at $35, and another decal from studiojk, combining two of my likes cherry blossoms with first initial.
Wall letters
I love the idea of covering up bland walls with my daughter's name (still to be decided) or an inspirational quote. Wall letters are also popular right now.
Etsy is also a good source to find letters in all sorts of designs and sizes. And, because the letters are homemade they're more customizable.
I also liked these wall letters that I found from Rosenberry Rooms. They reminded me of the whimsy of Dr. Seuss in a modern way.
For the boutique look, Pink Taffy Designs offered several colorful wall letters, and also offers customized hand-painted designs.
