Guide to Buying Second-Hand

One way to be more eco-friendly in your life is to shop second hand whenever you can. It's not just about saving money but it's about saving energy and reducing waste. Many times buying second-hand also helps another family because you may be helping them rid their home of clutter they don't need and you might be helping them financially.

Second-hand stores and yard/garage sales can be an excellent way to get what you need without going straight to the store to buy new but before you head out to start scavenger shopping, there are a few things you should know.

For example, did you know that there are certain things you should not buy second-hand? That's right; as much as you want to safe and reuse and buy second-hand, there are some things that you should purchase new.

Here are some things that you should avoid buying second-hand or used:

· Baby items and equipment such as baby beds, playpens and car seats. The problems with these items are that they may be damaged or they could have been recalled for safety issues and you would not know it.

· Children's furniture: for the same reason you should not buy baby items or baby furniture, it can be dangerous to buy used children's furniture.

· Bike helmets and safety helmets: Buying a safety helmet used is risky because it may have been in an accident and you would not necessarily see the damage. The helmet would then not work to protect you properly.

· Swim suits and undergarments: Underwear is worn too close to the body and should not be passed along for second-hand use. This is one thing you will want to go ahead and buy new.

· Makeup: it's not recommended to share makeup with another person. It can carry bacteria and contagious diseases. If it is still sealed, you can't guarantee that it is not old or expired. It's better to buy your makeup new, not second-hand.

When shopping second-hand, you should know your budget before you head out for a shopping day. Bring cash with you in small bills and change. Usually at yard sales and second hand shops, they will be cash only.

To save even more, practice the art of bundling. Try to package things you want together to get a better deal. This is a great tactic when shopping second-hand to save.

Know what you are shopping for before you head out shopping. Be familiar with brands and their worth. This will help you make smart choices about the purchases you make. Shop smart and save money while helping the environment.
