Guide to Celebrating Christmas in Mexico

Brenda Hoffman
While there are a lot of great places where you could be celebrating Christmas this year, a Mexican Christmas is something that is remarkably memorable.

One of the best ways to go about celebrating Christmas in Mexico is via a cruise ship. Of course, you could always celebrate Christmas in Mexico at one of the tourist destinations such as on the beach. There are also a lot of people who find that the best Mexican Christmas for them is in Colonial Mexico itself. Regardless as to whether you spend your Mexican Christmas in San Miguel de Allende, Cuernavaca, Guadalajara or Ajijic though, you will definitely be in awe. Not only will you get to leave behind dreary, cold weather in exchange for the sun but you will also get a great taste of Mexican culture at this time of the year as well.

There are a lot of traditions that go along with a Mexican Christmas. Their celebration begins around December 16 and ends around January 6 when they celebrate the Day of the Kings. This celebration is held in remembrance of the day when the three wise men went to visit baby Jesus and present him with their gifts. On this day it is a tradition to get together with family and friends to eat Rosca de Reyes. This is delicious sweet bread that has a lot of yummy fruits baked on top of it. Inside of this tasty sweet bread there is a special little figurine inside that represents the baby Jesus. If you are the person who ends up with this little figurine, then you are supposed to host a small party on February 2, which is known as Dia de la Candelaria (the Day of the Candles).

Mexican Christmas really is a time of parties and gatherings around the plaza. These parties are what make Mexican Christmas so special. They are also what help to make Mexico such an amazing place to celebrate the Christmas season.

Another great way to celebrate Mexican Christmas is by staying in a vacation rental home in Ajijic. Here you will not only be able to enjoy Mexican Christmas traditions but your own traditions as well. Not only will you be able to cook your traditional meal but you will also be able to sip hot, spiced ponche with tequila. You will also be able to listen to the Christmas music that you enjoy while smelling the fragrant Mexican flowers.
