Guide to Chip Placement in Casino Poker

As someone who plays a fair amount of poker, I can attest to the fact that when you take a look at the way someone places their chips in a poker game at a casino you will probably find out a decent amount about both the person and the way they play their poker. This can be extremely helpful in a casino because the big draw for casino poker is the ability for players to read their opponent based on their body language and other small cues that they can derive about their playing style. One of the interesting things about poker players is that they often do not think much about stacking their chips in a casino or about how they place their chips when not making a bet. This is something that I have spent a lot of time looking at and also something that you can take advantage of if you make huge efforts to display to the table how you stack and place your chips.

The first way most people place their chips is by putting them in little groups of 10 or 20 so that they are able to keep track of their stack and see how much money they have left behind to bet with. What you should notice about these people is that they are most likely either fairly good or fairly conservative in their play. Their chip placement says that they like to know exactly what is going on at any time and what their stake is in the game that they are playing in. This also means that when they bet (unless they are on tilt), they will probably have a reason and not just a hunch for that bet.

On the other hand, people who's chip placement is all over the place or who have chips stacked in differing amounts and sometimes who put chips all together are showing through their chip placement that they do not really care how they place their chips but play more based on feel or on their gut. These players for the most part tend to be a little looser and will play more aggressively. This does not mean however that they are bad, as you would think based on their chip placement, but it means that they are at one of the extremes. In short, they are either very bad or very good. What you should know after a little while of playing with them is which way they sit, depending on their placement.
