Guide to Christmas Services and Sermons in Washington, DC

Amanda Lay
Christmas is a very special time of year. It is important that we take time out from our annual shopping to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ. After all, Christmas isn't about gifts wrapped in tinsel. Jesus is the reason for the season. Living in the DC area, there are several places where you can enjoy Christmas services.

As a child, I have fond childhood memories of the Candlelight Family Christmas Eve Service at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland. Service times are 8 PM and midnight, and the format of the eight o' clock service is designed to better suit families with children from birth to age twelve. Free childcare is also provided during the eight o' clock service. For more information on the service schedule this year, please visit Fourth's website at www.4thpres.org. All are welcome.

For the past sixteen years, McLean Bible Church in McLean, Virginia has been my church home. McLean has a wide variety of service options at Christmastime. Each year, the Creative Arts Ministry presents, "Christmas In McLean." A wonderful musical presentation, the Good News of Jesus Christ is shared through music in a contemporary, relevant, way. Visitors are welcome and encouraged.

Similar to Fourth Presbyterian Church, McLean offers several options for Christmas Eve services as well. Service times are 5:30 PM, 8:00 PM, and 11 PM. The two earlier services are geared specifically toward families with infants and children. As an outreach ministry, free childcare is provided during both the five thirty and eight o' clock services. For more information, please visit the McLean Bible Church website at www.mcleanbible.org. Visitors are welcome.

Looking for a bilingual worship service? St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockville, Maryland conducts Family Christmas Eve services in both English and Spanish. A terrific ministry, the service is designed for those who require that their worship service be conducted in Spanish. Service times are 5:30 PM, 8:00 PM and 11PM. As an outreach, free childcare is provided during the two earlier services. For more information, please visit St. John's website at http://www.stjohns-rockville.org. All are welcome.

These are just a few of the many wonderful places where one can share a Christmas service here in the Washington, DC area. May the joy of Christmas be yours throughout the year! Merry Christmas!
