Guide to Decorating Vintage Style

T.R. Humphrey
Vintage is a look of yesteryear. A feeling of nostalgic for all days that have gone by. Decorating vintage should allow you to step back in time. Keep in mind that vintage style is elegant and worn. It is not junk that falls apart or items that look dirty. Remember to think of vintage as clean with light colors. This style refers to items of the 1940s to the 1950s.

Keep furniture and accessories with authentic textures and colors. For example, you could go to a local home improvement store and look for wallpaper with older patterns. If you decide to paint the walls choose light muted and pastel colors. Nothing bright or modern goes with vintage. However, with accessories and furniture you can mix and match different looks and styles. Pick items from the 1940s to 1950s. Be creative, but choose items you like. Here are a few ideas for vintage style.

Search flea markets and put together a collection of items. You can display them in a shadowbox. Hanging vintage purses or hats is a great concept. Buying old photos or using old family photos in sepia tones or black and white can add a nostalgic feel. Other items that could be of great interest in the vintage style are silk scarves, lace table cloths, handkerchiefs, jewelry, vintage eye glasses, or vintage clothing. You can display these items in creative ways to add that elegant touch. Use these items as art or buy posters of vintage art prints at www.allposters.com. Vintage mirrors, throws, embroidery, or patchwork are also good finds. Teacup sets, enamel pots, or jugs are also wonderful accessories. Look for family heirlooms like quilts, crochet, and other items that fit this style. Sometimes distressed furniture works well in vintage design.

If you are designing a kitchen or bath you can find many new appliances that have a vintage look. Check out www.vintagetub.com for some great appliances. If you are looking for furniture you may want to check out an antique store. Sometimes you can find antique furniture that can be reupholstered. You may also find elegant vintage lamps and other items. However, if you have no luck finding furniture try a local furniture store. There are many selections of new, but vintage looking furniture online at www.pastpresentfuture.com. My last idea is to scavenge junk yards or auctions for items like tubs or sinks. If you find an authentic design you can have it refurbished.
