Guide to Downtown Akron, Ohio Bars

Tara Dawn
Though Akron may not be able to compete with such cities as New York or LA, we certainly are not lacking in places to go. The number of bars in downtown is certainly apt, but many who are unfamiliar with certain establishments may have a hard time navigating, or finding one that is right for them. There's no need to unnecessarily pay a cover charge if you're not sure whether you'll enjoy your time. Here is a guide to the different bars in downtown Akron-so that you can plan your night out and be sure of a great time.

69 Taps

This bar does not (usually) charge a cover, and it carries-you guessed it-69 different varieties of beer on tap. This is a hang out of all different ages, though many of the college students in the area frequent this spot. A patio is great for the warmer months, it's got a pool table and dart board. It can get a bit crowded, but the beer is great.

Lux

Lux is an Akron nightclub, and I haven't been there since it was Posh (the name seems to change every few years). Because it is an 18 and over bar, there can be a cover charge. It is a loud, energetic spot perfect for those that enjoy dancing or scoping out the scene for potential hook-ups. A very young crowd, and from what I hear expensive drinks.

The Lounge

This bar is an alternative to the overwhelming mainstream scene that you see in many of the other downtown bars. More of an alternative crowd and a bar that plays rock music rather than the popular radio hits. The drink selection is rather good, and they have regular Wii sports nights.

Vertigo

This bar is a much smaller version of Lux, with a more mainstream music choice and a nightly DJ. The bar advertises daily drink specials, and a VIP lounge with full bottle service and private party bookings. The age of the crowd is varied, but again tends to fall toward the younger ages.

Whiskey Dicks

Another spot for dancing, Whiskey Dicks is a whirlwind of scantly-clad college girls and guys carrying large fishbowls of mixed drinks. It certainly lives up to its self-proclaimed title of "Best Party Bar in Akron." If you enjoy going out for the sole purpose of getting highly intoxicated, this is probably the best place to do it, or at least the easiest.

Barley House

I've witnessed a much more mixed crowd in the Barley House-at least in a generational sense. The bar serves pretty decent food, and the patio has made it a popular lunch spot for many who work downtown. The bar has a decent drink selection, and only on special events nights is there a cover. The music is mainstream, and dancing can sometimes be difficult on the poorly-marked dance floor, but is an option.

Crave

This restaurant/bar is incredibly classy, and the prices reflect it. Though certainly worth it if you've got the funds, the food and drink selections are both fantastic. I personally appreciate the fantastic microbrew selections, but the martinis are pretty good as well. It's great place for groups to get dinner, and then top the night off with great drinks-or just get the drinks.

The Lockview

This restaurant and bar boasts Akron's best grilled cheese, and has a fantastic beer selection (I would argue one of the best in the city). The scene is certainly not the mainstream radio-pop that you would get in many of the other bars downtown, but it sometimes swings too far in the other direction, with the service at times being a bit snobbish. It is certainly worth the trip, however, as the food is absolutely fantastic.

There are obviously many, many fantastic spots to frequent in Akron-and though I may not endorse any of these bars in particular, knowing what the city has to offer will allow you to find whatever is best for you. Have a great time! Cheers!

I was there about 6 months ago, but have not been back since (nor do I frequent it in any capacity). I just tried to look for any word of that online, but haven't found anything concrete. I'll have to give them a call to verify and have the editors change if it has indeed closed. Thanks for the heads up!

Last time I checked, Whiskey Dicks has been closed for months.
