Guide to Eating Healthy While on a Budget

Stacy J. Day
It's difficult to commit to a healthy eating plan in order to lose weight, especially when you're on a budget, because although unhealthy, fatty and high calories foods will cause you to gain weight and eventually develop chronic deadly illnesses, they're unfortunately a lot cheaper than healthier, all-natural foods. If you're determined to eat healthier, however, there is no reason to be deterred by this fact, because if you look for the right foods, there are actually some that are healthy as well as low cost. Below some of these foods are highlighted, and maybe you can add them to your new healthier eating lifestyle.

Vegetables - Vegetables can always be purchased for quite cheaply, especially vegetables that are in season. To purchase them for even less, you might want to shop at your local Farmer's Market or even grow them yourself for a substantial savings.

Traders Joe's - If you live near a Trader Joe's and you haven't shopped there yet, you don't know what you're missing. Trader Joe's sells all-natural and/or organic foods and personal items, but for substantially less than what other health food stores sell them for.

Uncle Sam Breakfast Cereal - This cereal by U.S. Mills, is guaranteed low glycemic, contains 10 grams of fiber per serving, and is made with whole wheat kernels and flaxseeds. It's great for weight loss due to its nutritional content, and great for the budget because one box is just over $2 at Walmart. You can also purchase it in bulk and each box will cost less than $2.

Beans - many people stay away from beans because they're afraid they'll give them gas, but most people are able to digest them okay without suffering from this embarrassing problem. Beans are a perfect food for people trying to save money and lose weight because they're natural, high in fiber and other nutrients, and they're extremely economical. You could take $2 and cook enough beans to last a week. Beans are good in soups, omelets, casseroles, and some people even add them to desserts in order to off-set some of the carbohydrates and add more fiber.

Yogurt - Yogurt is very versatile and can be eaten with breakfast, as a snack, or even as a dessert. There are many brands on the market today, especially the "light" kinds, which are perfect to be eaten while on a diet or while trying to maintain your weight. Yogurt is also low cost, as long as you don't buy the fancy brands, and if you choose to shop at Walmart, you can get many brands for around 50 cents per cup.

Popcorn - Popcorn prepared without massive amounts of butter and salt is a great and high fiber snack. Jolly Time is one of the few brands that is really high fiber, but you'll need to get the kind that you need to prepare the old-fashioned way in order to reap the full benefits. You can also purchase a large bag of Jolly Time popcorn very economically.

There are many other foods that are considered nutritious, perfect for a diet as well as low cost, and all you need to do is take your time during your next grocery shopping trip in order to discover which foods are good choices and which aren't such smart choices.
