Guide to Evergreen Container Plants

You don't need a huge lot to enjoy evergreen plantings. Many evergreen trees and shrubs can actually be grown in containers with little effort. In fact, growing your favorite evergreen plants in containers can be a great way to add year-round interest to even the smallest of spaces.

Some of the most popular types of evergreen plants that can be easily grown in containers include cypress, eucalyptus, pine, arborvitae, juniper, and Japanese holly. So what does it take to successfully grow these plants in pots? Soil is the most important factor when growing evergreen container plants. The ideal soil should be lightweight and free draining. Depending on the container, this might consist of a soil-based, nutrient-rich compost and perlite mix or strictly a soilless potting mix made up of sphagnum peat moss, coarse sand, perlite or vermiculite.

Since good drainage is crucial for evergreen container plants, the use of soilless mix is generally preferred. Soilless mix should be mixed with some type of grit, like sand, as well as slow-release fertilizer. In addition, mulch can help with retaining suitable moisture levels while adding acidity to the soil. The proper size and weight of your container is important too. While nearly any type of container is deemed suitable for growing evergreens, adequate drainage is essential. Without it evergreen plants would simply acquire root rot and die.

Ideally, the container should be both large enough to accommodate the evergreen plant and sturdy enough to keep from falling over. Of course, its location may also determine the type of container used as well. For example, a more lightweight option, like plastic or fiberglass, is suitable for areas such as balconies or rooftops whereas patio settings may house large-rolling, wooden planters or clay-type pots. On the other hand, clay containers are prone to cracking in cold weather, making climate another factor to consider.

Less heavy containers can be partially filled with gravel or pebbles to prevent them from tipping over. The remaining space is then filled with the plant and surrounded by soilless mix. When caring for evergreen container plants, watering is also crucial. Potted plants dry out quicker than those in the ground. Therefore, you'll need to check the plants often, watering at least once every week or two-or as needed. Evergreen plants may also require annual pruning to keep them at a manageable size.
