City, State, and County Jobs
Start in the city you live in. Check the city's official website to see if they are hiring. Cities generally offer a variety of employment and almost always have a handful of openings. Typically these jobs offer very good benefits and decent pay. To find your city's website use google and do a keyword search, for example: City of Denton. After searching the city you live in, try the County and State as well.
Colleges and Universities
Any Colleges or Universities in your town? You might think that all the students who work have snatched up these jobs, but you'd be wrong in thinking that. I have found that the universities in our town offer a wide variety of employment with good wages and benefits. Google any colleges or universities in your area and visit the human resources area to find out what types of staff jobs are available.
Public Schools
Most towns and cities have public schools. Search for your local school districts website and click on the employment or human resources tab. Schools offer many administrative positions as well as maintenance or groundskeepers positions.
Headquarters
Any companies that are headquartered in your area will have a larger pool of jobs--While driving around make sure to keep a mental or written list to help in your employment search. Pick a building, find a sign--search companies that are nearby so that you can search their website for job openings--many companies just don't advertise these jobs--the internet is cheaper, faster, and reaches more people.
Craigslist
Craigslist.com is also a good place to search for employment. After selecting the Employment section type in your city. It will pull jobs in the local area. Be careful, not all postings are legit, there are scammers out there, but they seem to be in the paper as well, you just have to be careful anytime you are looking for a job.
Temporary Placement Agencies
When I lived in Austin I learned how to play the temporary agency circuit. It just isn't enough to visit one agency, you need to set aside a day or two to visit as many as possible and register with all of them. Also take advantage of any classes given to improve your typing and ten key skills plus any other types of skill they can assist you with. By registering with all the temp agencies you have a better chance of getting a good job, even if it is temporary, you will soon have another one lined up. It also gives you the opportunity to get on the job training and experience, with time you will be able to command higher pay.
Here is the secret to landing a job with a temporary agency quickly--once you have registered don't go home thinking they are going to call you first. Every morning get up, get dressed, call the agency just as they open and ask if there are any jobs today? If not, move onto the next agency. Those who call first get jobs first! It can be very exciting and you will be able to add new skills to your resume quickly.
Make a list with all of the temporary agencies you have registered with and their phone numbers so that it is easy for you to call all of them everyday until you are placed.
Hospitals or Medical Offices
Any hospitals in your area? Do a google search for hospitals in your area. Start looking at their websites or call their job lines to find out what openings they are trying to fill. Don't forget, where there are hospitals there are medical offices.
With all of these companies offering employment, you are bound to find something that suites you! Get those resumes together and send them out--You should have a new job in no time! Be sure to read my article about preparing for an interview!
